2019:

  • Darrell Waltrip to retire: After living life in the fast lane for the last 60 years, Darrell Waltrip is backing off the throttle. The 72-year-old NASCAR legend and Franklin resident says he will cross the finish line of his television broadcasting career at the end of Fox Sports’ NASCAR race coverage this season, which ends on June 23 with the Toyota/Save Mart 350 in Sonoma, California. Waltrip, a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame who has been in the booth since 2001, picked this week to make the announcement as he prepares to call the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway, where he experienced his greatest success as a driver. “Bristol is my house. I’ve got 12 wins at Bristol, I’ve got a grandstand that has 43,000 seats in my honor at Bristol,” Waltrip said. “It’s in Tennessee. I love that racetrack. It’s been good to me. I could’ve waited until Charlotte or somewhere else down the road, but it’s been hanging over my head. I just wanted to clear the air, let people know what my plans are and then other people can make plans accordingly. Like who’s going to take my place or is somebody going to take my place?”(Tennessean)

2009:

  • Camping World to leave Truck Series? NASCAR is putting out feelers for a sponsor to replace Camping World for the Truck Series. Camping World entered the sport as the sponsor for Richard Childress Racing and Kevin Harvick Inc. on Ron Hornaday’s truck in 2007. Later that season CW expanded to include what was formerly the NASCAR Busch East and North developmental series. Camping World was named title sponsor of the Truck Series last fall following an extensive search after Craftsman Tools bowed out.(FoxSports)(4-4-2009)

2008:

  • Reutimann doesn’t anticipate driver switch if he fails to qualify: #44-David Reutimann faces another weekend where he has to qualify on speed, and he is not looking forward to it. Reutimann said Thursday he wouldn’t anticipate that Michael Waltrip Racing would put him in the car driven by #00-Michael McDowell if he doesn’t make the field. If Reutimann misses the race, the team could replace McDowell with Retuimann, but Reutimann said that hasn’t been discussed. “The #00 is the car that Michael McDowell drives, and as far as I know, if I don’t get in, I’ll be watching,” Reutimann said. “I wouldn’t want to do that. My job is to get the 44 car in. If I can’t get that car in, then I don’t need to be in the race.”(SceneDaily.com)(4-4-2008)

2005:

  • Newman to Roush? There are reports that Jack Roush may be interested in Penske’s #12-Ryan Newman for the #6 ride [to be vacated by Mark Martin], or perhaps even Newman and his crew chief Matt Borland, too.(Winston Salem Journal), a thought comes to mind….Not Bloody Likely.(4-4-2005)

2004:

  • 91stanley RfrontNo Full Time Elliott in 2005, but could be a full time #91: Ray Evernham said it’s unlikely Bill Elliott will return to a full-time schedule next year, but his car could. If he lands a full-time sponsor for a third team, Evernham said he’d consider an arrangement akin to Richard Childress Racing, which won the Busch Series owners championship last year with a car shared by Kevin Harvick and Johnny Sauter. “I think that’s a great idea,” Evernham said. “That might be a direction this sport is heading. It wouldn’t be out of the question to see Bill Elliott in a car for 15 races and somebody else in it for the others.”(Richmond Times Dispatch)(4-4-2004)

The idea is to get the cars on pit road more often, and to give the crew people who go over the wall more chances to shine each weekend. That move would seem to play into the hands of Matt Kenseth’s #17 crew due to their frequent fast-as-lightning work on the DeWalt Ford when it comes to pit road [the crew is not a parcipating team in the McDonald’s Drive-Thru Pit Championship].(Ford Racing)(4-4-2003)
