  • Mayfield giving up on lawsuit against NASCAR: Jeremy Mayfield said Monday he likely will not pursue any additional appeals in his lawsuit against NASCAR over a May 2009 drug test the sanctioning body said was positive for methamphetamines. Mayfield has until June 25 to file an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, but he said Monday he likely will move on from the case that has lasted nearly three years. The lawsuit started less than a month after the May 1 drug test, which Mayfield claims was a false positive for the prescription medication Adderall and the over-the-counter allergy medication Claritin D. A U.S. District Court judge ruled in favor of NASCAR in January 2010 before the case ever went to trial. The U.S. Court of Appeals upheld that ruling in March. “We’re probably going to move on,” Mayfield said. “They won on a technicality, a paper I had to sign to participate.” Mayfield was speaking after a court appearance in North Carolina Superior Court in Caldwell County. He faces four felony larceny charges stemming from a Feb. 27 indictment that states he was in possession of stolen goods. The case was continued until Sept. 10. Mayfield would not blame NASCAR for what was scheduled to happen later Monday-as a result of foreclosure, his property in Catawba County is scheduled for auction Monday afternoon. He said he plans to move once the sale is finalized.(Sporting News)(4-30-2012)
  • Energy Transfer Partners to merge with Sunoco: Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. and Sunoco, Inc. announced that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement whereby ETP will acquire Sunoco in a unit and cash transaction valued at $50.13 per share, or a total consideration of approximately $5.3 billion, based on ETP’s closing price on April 27, 2012. This combination will create one of the largest and most diversified energy partnerships in the country by expanding ETP’s geographic footprint and strengthening its presence in the transportation, terminalling and logistics of crude oil, NGLs and refined products. By acquiring Sunoco, ETP will also own Sunoco’s general partner interest and the incentive distribution rights (IDRs) in Sunoco Logistics Partners, as well as Sunoco’s 32.4 percent interest in Sunoco Logistics Partners’ limited partner units and Sunoco’s branded retail business, which generates additional stable cash flows from a portfolio of approximately 4,900 retail locations in the U.S. Sunoco’s logistics and retail businesses will continue to maintain headquarters in the Philadelphia area consistent with their current operating presence. In addition, under the merger agreement, Sunoco will continue its plans for exiting its refining business as previously announced, as well as continue its plans for the proposed refinery joint venture being discussed by Sunoco and The Carlyle Group. The transaction has been approved by each company’s board of directors and is expected to close in the third or fourth quarter of 2012, subject to approval of Sunoco shareholders and customary regulatory approvals.(in part from a pdf PR at sunocoinc.com), no word on how or if this will affect the sponsorship of NASCAR and use of Sunoco Racing Fuel in NASCAR.(4-30-2012)
  • Mike Ford replaces Irwin as Almirola’s crew chief: Richard Petty Motorsports asserted its commitment to winning with the hiring of Chase-proven Mike Ford as crew chief for the #43 team and driver Aric Almirola. The veteran crew chief joins the team after leading Denny Hamlin’s #11 team to six straight post-season appearances in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Ford will join the team immediately and will be atop the pit box in Talladega. The 42-year-old Morristown, Tenn., native spent the past six seasons with Joe Gibbs Racing as Hamlin’s crew chief. In that span, he led his team to 17 wins, 66 top-five finishes and 108 top-10 finishes and never missed a Chase appearance. The 12-year Sprint Cup veteran also previously held crew chief roles for Dale Jarrett at Robert Yates Racing and Bill Elliott at Evernham Motorsports. Ford replaces Greg Erwin, who joined the team in mid-2011.(Richard Petty Motorsports)(4-30-2012)
  • Some post-Richmond stats:
    • #18-Kyle Busch’s victory snapped a 21-race drought that dated back to Michigan last August. The win was his fourth Cup victory at Richmond, all of them scored consecutively in the Cup Series’ last four visits to Henrico County in the spring.
    • For those keeping count, Stewart-Haas Racing has three victories, two with #14-Stewart and one with #39-Ryan Newman. Joe Gibbs Racing now has three victories, two with #11-Denny Hamlin and one with Kyle Busch. Roush Fenway Racing has two wins, one with #17-Matt Kenseth and one with #16-Biffle. Penske Racing has one win with #2-Brad Keselowski. That’s your totals, overall in just nine events. Richard Childress Racing and Hendrick Motorsports are still posting goose eggs in the win column in 2012.
    • Kyle Busch’s win Saturday was the 24th Cup victory of his career, moving him into a tie with brother Kurt in that category.
    • The top-10 finishers at Richmond piloted four Chevys, four Toyotas, a Ford and a Dodge.
    • #88-Earnhardt and #48-Johnson now lead all drivers with seven top-10 finishes in this season’s nine races. Kenseth and Biffle lead the pack with five top-5 results in those nine events.
    • Earnhardt’s fourth top-5 finish of the season matches his total number of top 5s scored in all of 2011. The last time he managed more such results in a year was in 2008.
    • #14-Stewart led a lap (118 of them, actually) for the first time since Fontana.
    • #5-Kasey Kahne’s fifth-place finish was his best of the season.
    • #99-Edwards now has five consecutive finishes of 11th or better.
    • #42-Juan Pablo Montoya has finished 12th for the second straight week. In both instances, his team used a carefully orchestrated strategy of not having JPM run into a jet dryer.
    • #16-Biffle’s 18th-place result was his worst of the season.
    • #29-Harvick’s 19th-place run matches his worst of the season. He also finished 19th at Martinsville.
    • #15-Clint Bowyer’s seventh-place finish was his best since Bristol.

  • JD Motorsports loses hauler to fire: JD Motorsports, the #01 Chevy in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, suffered a total loss to their hauler on Sunday evening when it caught fire at their race shop. There were no injuries and the tractor was detached and pulled away before suffering any damages. However, their hauler loaded with equipment, some uniforms, back-up parts, engines, shocks and springs for their operation was a total loss. The only good part was the primary and backup #01 Restaurant.com Chevys for this weekend’s NASCAR race at Talladega Superspeedway were not on the hauler. The race shop itself didn’t suffer any damage, as well. “The fire department told me the fire started near the refrigerator on the hauler;” said Johnny Davis, team owner. “That’s powered by propane, like everyone else’s is on these haulers. It started around 7 p.m. and we were able to detach the tractor before anything happened to it and get that out of the way. The hauler itself is a total loss; almost everything on there is burnt beyond use. Luckily, the fine folks at Robby Benton Racing (NASCAR Camping World Truck Series) stepped up and will let us use their hauler for this weekend’s race. We were also fortunate enough to have Black’s Tire helps us out to get to race this weekend, too. On behalf of everyone on my team, we’d all like to thank them for their help.”(JD Motorsports)(4-30-2012)
