May 8 – Today in Jayski’s NASCAR history

May 8, 1998

  • In an almost eerie coincidence in light of what happened to Harry Gant, Junior Johnson, legendary driver and team owner, escaped serious injury in a nasty highway traffic accident April 21st. Johnson was a passenger in a pick up truck that pulled into the path of an oncoming car. The impact was severe enough the truck Junior was riding in rolled over, and wound up on it’s side. Thankfully no one was injured in the wreck.(WC Scene)(5-8-98)
  • Textilease, a uniform service, has signed on as an associate sponsor of the Brett Bodine #11 Paychex/Team Scandia Ford team for the rest of the season.(WC Scene)(5-8-98)
  • Those rumored tests at Daytona/Talladega to try to find alternatives to restrictor plates, were just that…rumors. While admitting that the idea was discussed, NASCAR’s Kevin Triplett said there were no such tests scheduled.(WC Scene)(5-8-98)
  • I hear Jeff Fuller is in line to fill in for Joe Gibbs Racing BGN team when scheduling conflicts prevent either Tony Stewart or Bobby Labonte from running the Shell #44. Jeff is currently tutoring JD Gibbs, who will take over the ride full time in 1999. The strategy is to gain as many owner points as possible for next year’s provisionals. Also, Jeff will fill in for Stewart this weekend at Loudon if there is a rain out, which would cause conflicts with Stewart’s other racing commitments.(5-8-98)
  • UPDATE: From the Tony Stewart Website: The NASCAR Winston Cup Series car of Tony Stewart circled Richmond International Raceway, testing for the June 6 Pontiac Excitement 400 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race. Stewart’s Joe Gibbs NASCAR Winston Cup Series pit crew set up a mock pit so that Stewart could practice Richmond pit stops in the heavier and unfamiliar NASCAR Winston Cup Series vehicle. RIR’s unofficial timing caught the pit crew cranking out stops at around 20 seconds.(Tony Stewart Website).(5-7-98) – Tony Stewart will continue to honor his Indy contract for the remainder of this season, then plans to run Winston Cup full time next year. His plan includes a return to the Indy 500 if he doesn’t score a victory at Indy this year.(5-8-98)
  • Hermie Sadler will make his 150th consecutive Busch series start at New Hampshire, May 9th. That will give him the record for most consecutive starts of any active BGN driver. Because he is sixth in the BGN points, he is almost guaranteed a starting berth in the race.(WC Scene)(5-8-98)
  • Mike Laughin, who suffered extensive burns to his hands in a savage wreck at the season ending race at Homestead in 1996, is making his much anticipated comeback to the BGN Series. He will make his first post-wreck Busch series start(attempt) at New Hampshire, and will also race in the Busch races at Richmond, Myrtle Beach and Indianapolis Raceway Park this year, with an eye towards running a full season in 1999. While recovering from his injuries, Mike has already won three races in the Sportsman division at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.(WC Scene)(5-8-98)
