Five wins and the 1986 Winston Cup championship wasn’t a bad year at all for Dale Earnhardt, Richard Childress Racing and crew chief Kirk Shelmerdine.
But then came 1987, and one of the most dominant seasons NASCAR had seen in a long, long time. Earnhardt was the master of the race track, and his crew, led by Shelmerdine, ruled pit road. For a racer like Shelmerdine, it was the highest of highs.
It was also a feeling he’s chased ever since.
