NASCAR would be obligated to bring one race annually over a period of five years to Winston-Salem’s Bowman Gray Stadium under a proposed agreement between the organization and the city, officials confirmed Friday.
On Monday, the city council approved covering half the projected $1 million cost for a new scoreboard at the historic track, with the condition that NASCAR commit to hosting the races involving one of its three national series: Cup, Xfinity and Craftsman Trucks.
“City management currently is working with NASCAR officials on drafting the agreement,” Winston-Salem Assistant City Manager Ben Rowe said in an email Friday.
The city owns the facility. NASCAR bought Winston-Salem Speedway Inc., which manages racing operations at the stadium, in March 2024.
