NTSB holds Saturday briefing on Biffle plane accident

The National Transportation Safety Board held another media briefing Saturday morning to provide an update on Thursday’s crash at the Statesville Regional Airport involving Greg Biffle and his family.

Michael Graham of the NTSB once again gave the updates:

  • They do not know the circumstances of why the airplane was trying to return to the airport.
  • NTSB has confirmed a text stating “emergency landing” from a person on the plane to a family member. At this time, investigators will not release who that was.
  • They are still gathering details on who was the pilot at the time. They have information on that but have not confirmed it.
  • They have taken several witness statements.
  • The airplane was reported stable on approach with landing lights on but was coming in low. That is consistent with the debris field.
  • The cockpit voice recorder is now in Washington, DC and they are attempting to recover the data today.
  • The airplane maintenance logs are in the possession of investigators.
  • The accident scene has been documented by drones.
  • The engines will be relocated for further examination.
  • Wreckage will be removed from the airport, starting today.
  • Investigators have seen some videos of the crash and nothing appeared out of the ordinary other than the plane coming in low.
  • Today will be the last on scene briefing.
