Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson strongly defended his NASCAR team on Thursday from allegations made by rival Joe Gibbs Racing in a federal lawsuit, saying, “Spire has not even begun to fight.”
“I don’t want to be in court,” Dickerson said, calling the lawsuit an effort to “diminish” his team. “… They’ve called us a lot of things, and we hear it. If the point is to try to hurt us or try to burn us down? OK. I don’t think they’re gonna beat us; they might win something, but I’ll make sure they wish they hadn’t.”
…
“We’re not here to diminish anyone,” JGR co-owner Heather Gibbs said in a statement provided to The Athletic in response to Dickerson’s comments. “Drivers like Carson Hocevar are exactly what NASCAR needs. I couldn’t be more of an advocate for young drivers coming into the series.
“In terms of the lawsuit, our singular purpose is to protect our trade secrets — the most important information that our race team (and any race team for that matter) possesses.”
Spire was named as a co-defendant in the lawsuit. Still, Dickerson has emphatically insisted that the team does not have any of JGR’s information, which is proprietary to each NASCAR team (since car setups account for a large part of the speed shown on the racetrack, along with the engine, driver and crew).
