“The folks in Dare County are staking thousands of dollars on the notion that NASCAR can sell the Outer Banks. The Dare County Tourism Board has agreed to sponsor car owner Joe Falk’s No. 91 Chevrolet, driven by Kevin Lepage, in Sunday’s DieHard 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The car will feature a decal of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in America, on its hood, as well as the tourism board’s 800 number. The board agreed to spend up to $30,000 to advertise on two places on the car and will not have to pay anything if Lepage fails to qualify for the race, according to an article in a local Dare County newspaper.”(News & Record Online – Bob Zeller)(4-22-98)
