A few weeks old but interesting from Jack Arute of ESPN: “Another story breaking this week concerns Dale Earnhardt’s gas man, Danny “Chocolate” Meyers. The burly 49-year-old mechanic plans to pull “double duty” over Memorial Day weekend. He will serve as a fuel man on one of A.J. Foyt’s Indy 500 entries and then jet down to North Carolina to gas Earnhardt’s Goodwrench Service Plus Chevrolet in the Coca-Cola 600 that evening at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Only one other competitor has completed the unique racing daily double. John Andretti, who drives for Richard Petty, participated in the driving doubleheader in 1994. There is more to this news than simply a PR opportunity. My sources say that several of the people behind the Richard Childress operation are in serious negotiations to field an IRL entry either late this year or in 1999. A prospectus has been written and it is being passed around to test the “sponsor waters.” Now that would be something, wouldn’t it? A jet black GM Goodwrench
Service Plus car in the Indianapolis 500. Bet it’s No. 3. Who’ll drive? Maybe? Naw, that would be too good to be true.”(ESPN)(5-17-98)
