A host of Winston Cup cars were forced to replace windshield mounting bolts prior to Winston practice Friday morning. Seems NASCAR technical inspectors, sensitive to the recent incident at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in which three fans perished when hit by debris off an Indy Racing League car, mandated the heavier hardware in an effort to better secure the windshields to the racers. The new configuration utilizes larger bolts, backed by washers, mounted through the windshield and the body where they were secured by lock-washers and nuts. Previously, the mounting hardware, which more resembled small rivets, just screwed into the body’s windshield frame.
