Whitecaps Racing Development, a newly-formed affiliate company of the West Michigan Whitecaps Professional Baseball Team (Class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers), today announced the purchase of Berlin Raceway from the Mysliwiec family, which founded the track in 1951. The new ownership group also announced the addition Johnny Benson Jr. as an equity partner in the venture. Benson is the driver of the #10 Aaron’s Rent Pontiac in the Winston Cup series and a Grand Rapids native. Benson flew from his home in Charlotte, North Carolina, to speak at the press conference, which was attended by more than 300 race fans, track employees, drivers and sponsors, and public officials. “It’s a great track that deserves to be open for another 50 years,” Benson said. “It’s close to me because I have a lot of wins there and my dad does too. I just wanted to make sure that it’s going to continue operating and be successful.” The new ownership group also announced the return of ASA racing to the Berlin Raceway in 2001 on July 14(PR)(10-18-2000)
