Newmans Plans Change UPDATE finishes Schoolwork: ALLTEL Team Penske has decided to forgo the remaining ARCA races on their schedule and instead focus on their Busch Series and Winston Cup events. The decision was made after Newman’s fifth-place finish at Michigan on June 10. “We knew at the beginning of the year that the objective for Ryan was seat time,” said John Erickson, Penske Racing South team manager. “We’ve just decided the best thing for Ryan and the team is to concentrate on our Busch and Winston Cup races, in addition to some more testing. The beauty of this program is we can change the schedule to fit our needs, all with the goal of preparing for the full 2002 Winston Cup schedule in mind.”(Tom Roberts PR)(6-14-2001) UPDATE: Ryan Newman has completed the two courses he needed to get a degree in vehicle structure engineering from Purdue and expects to graduate in August. Newman took two courses via the Internet through Catawba Valley Technical college in Hickory, completing them last month. The grades will be transferred to Purdue. Newman was a full-time college student before moving to North Carolina to pursue his driving career. He finished fifth in Sunday’s Winston Cup race at Michigan Speedway.(That’s Racin’)(6-15-2001)
