Benson likes the HANS: In the last-lap accident at Talladega, #10-Johnny Benson was wearing a HANS device for the first time (he had been wearing the Hutchens Device). His car went head-on into the backstretch wall at close to 200 mph. “It was pretty big because my neck doesnt hurt at all,” Benson said after walking away. “My chest hurts a little bit from the HANS device because its going to work in that area, but Id rather have my chest hurt than my neck hurt. My neck is in perfectly good shape. At first I criticized everybody saying when theyd get in a wreck, Oh man, that thing saved my life, but Ill tell you what, Im going to go right behind them now and say that that was a damn good thing I had that thing on because I hit the wall awful hard.”(Gaston Gazette)(10-25-2001)
