Catdaddy Carolina Moonshine has signed a three-race agreement to sponsor Kirk Shelmerdine’s #27 Chevy in the Nextel Open on Saturday in hopes of transferring into the Nextel All-Star Challenge at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. In addition to the Nextel Open, Catdaddy Carolina Moonshine will sponsor Shelmerdine in the May 28 Coca-Cola 600 and the Oct. 14 Bank of America 500, both at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Additional races could be added later this season. Shelmerdine has made two starts this season with $335,333 in winnings. He finished 20th in the Daytona 500 and started 22nd in the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. His driving career began in 1981 with one start; he made 18 of his 25 career starts in 2004. Shelmerdine is best known for his achievements while working as Crew Chief for Richard Childress Racing. Between 1986 and ’92, he led Dale Earnhardt to four of his seven NASCAR Cup Championships. His crew-chief statistics include 46 wins among 246 top tens, 142 top fives and 14 pole positions. The Philadelphia native started Kirk Shelmerdine Racing in 2002.
