UPDATE and IMAGES: Carmichael tested the #66 Coca Cola Ford of Matt Martin at New Smyrna Speedway, why a Ford when Ginn Racing runs Chevy’s? because Matt Martin is signed with Ford, Mark Martin, Matt’s father, will drive for Ginn Racing in 2007 in the #01 U.S. Army Chevy.
UPDATE 2: Carmichael turned about 80 test laps over the half-mile oval at New Smyrna Speedway in a Late Model owned by Nextel Cup Series veteran Mark Martin. Martin supervised the morning practice session before flying to New York City for NASCAR’s Champion’s Week festivities. He was not available for comment. Members of Martin’s local race team combined with some of Ginn Racing’s crew from Mooresville, N.C., to support Carmichael’s practice session. Jay Frye, Ginn Racing’s CEO and managing partner, confirmed the test session and said Carmichael’s lap times were comparable to qualifying speeds posted in New Smyrna’s recent Governor’s Cup event. “Ricky ran quite a few laps, fast laps,” Frye said. “My guys down there reported it was a very successful test. This was Ricky’s third or fourth time in a race car but his first real test in a car with that kind of horsepower. Frye said Carmichael will be back in several weeks for another test in Martin’s Late Model racer.(in part from the Daytona Beach News Journal)
