Benson to join Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame:

Johnny Benson Jr. followed his fathers lead into the world of stock car racing, and he ended up chasing his own dreams right up to the NASCAR Sprint Cup level. Benson and Sweeris will now follow their folks straight into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame. Hall officials announced its Class of 2013 Thursday, July 11, and it includes a pair of second generation inductees in Benson and Sweeris. Benson and other inductees will be inducted into hall of fame during the organizations annual dinner ceremony at the Gerald R. Ford Museum on Oct. 8. Benson earned championships in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series (1995) and the Camping World Trucks Series (2008). He also ran eight seasons in NASCARs top level, the Sprint Cup Series, with his lone victory coming at Rockingham, capturing the Microwave Popcorn 400 in 2002. He launched his career by winning the 1989 Berlin Raceway Late Model championship. His father was inducted into the hall of fame in 2001.( MLive.com )
