#47-A.J. Allmendinger won the Cheez-It 355 Sprint Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International for his 1st win of the season, 1st win at Watkins Glen, and 1st career win. He and Ambrose battled door to door for much of the final laps of the race.
#9-Ambrose finished 2nd followed by #41-Busch, #42-Larson, #99-Edwards, #22-Logano, #4-Harvick, #16-Biffle, #20-Kenseth, and #55-Vickers.
Pole winner #24-Gordon had electrical problems during the race and finished 34th, 3 laps down.
#14-Regan Smith, filling in for Tony Stewart, was involved in a late race accident and finished 37th.
There was a large wreck on lap 56 when #16-Biffle got off course and then came back on the track, causing #31-Newman to get into the back of Biffle and spin into the barrier. Newman’s car then bounced back out into traffic and clipped McDowell, ripping the rear suspension out of McDowell’s car and sending him into another barrier. Several other cars suffered some damage checking up or running through the debris. The race was red flagged for a total of 1 hour and 21 minutes while the track was cleared and the barriers were repaired.
There was another red flag of nearly 20 minutes for track clean up with 4 laps remaining when #11-Hamlin hit sand barriers at the end of pit road after a spin.
#88-Earnhardt, Jr. (3 wins) takes the points lead, now 5 over #24-Gordon.
