What happened at the end of the Martinsville Truck race broadcast?

It couldn’t have happened at a worse moment. With only the green-white-checkered flag finish to go and the green about to wave for the end of the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series NASCAR Hall of Fame 200 at Martinsville Speedway, the video feed suddenly cut out and viewers heard only the audio of what turned out to be a wild finish, with Todd Gilliland winning his first Truck race.

The video came back after the checkered flag was waved, but viewers saw only that before the network cut away to a college football game.

So, what happened?

According to a Fox Sports spokesperson:

“FOX Sports experienced a technical issue that caused us to lose our feed of the finish of today’s race. We sincerely apologize to our viewers for this inconvenience.”

In LA, the network lost the feed before the end of the race. They were already running long (the race was supposed to be off the air by 3:30 p.m. ET). The plan was to switch the broadcast as soon as the victory lane interview ended.  But when the video feed was lost in those final laps around 3:46 PM ET, at first, they were not able to reestablish the connection and the network decided to toss to the football game.

The Martinsville Truck Series race will re-air in its entirety, including the finish, with winner and other post-race interviews, Sunday at 9:30 A.M. ET on FS2.
