He was born on February 15, 1949 in Woodbridge, VA, to the late Woodrow and Elsie Stone Simmons. Carl was a veteran serving in the US Army. He was also a NASCAR official for over 35 years and was very devoted to his racing career. He was known among the NASCAR Community as “36A” and “Back Stretch”. During his career, Carl was a mentor to many, friend to all. He was known to be stern but fair; loved to make people laugh and gave the best bear hugs. Not only was Carl devoted to his racing career, he was also a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son.
He will be deeply missed and loved by his wife, Cathy Simmons; daughter, Shelley Lewis and husband, Mark, and grandchildren, Andrew and Brooke Lewis; brother, Daniel Simmons and wife, Lynda.
