April 6 – Today in Jayski’s NASCAR history

April 6, 2014

  • Rain postpones race at Texas: The Duck Commander 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, which was scheduled for a green flag start at 3:16pm/et on Sunday April 6th, has been postponed due to rain to Monday, April 7th and is scheduled to air on FOX at 12:00pm/et. FOXSports1 is scheduled to air a 30 minutes pre-race show at 11:30am/et.
Driver Introductions and pre-race ceremonies were done Sunday afternoon. Track drying was attempted by the Air Titan 1 and Air Titan 2 as well as some jet dryers, but rain started again and there were some weepers on the backstretch.
The The National Weather Service forecast (updated as of 6:52pm/et on 4/6/2014) for the Fort Worth, TX area on Monday is:
a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

UPDATE: Fans at Texas Motor Speedway will be able to get weather updates regarding the Duck Commander 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, which is scheduled for a 2:00pm/ct [3:00pm/et] start today, and its surrounding activities via the “Big Hoss TV” video board broadcast.
“Big Hoss TV,” which utilizes FM frequency 97.7 FM and 454.700 on the scanner frequencies for its audio broadcast, will provide fans with the latest updates on weather and status of pre-race activities. For those with a view of “Big Hoss TV” at the speedway, the world’s largest high-definition LED video board will provide a scroll during the day with weather updates and activity schedule.
“Big Hoss TV” also will provide entertainment for campers in the meantime, ranging from a rebroadcast of the thrilling 2010 AAA Texas 500 and a live appearance on screen by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Fans will be asked to tweet #IWannaRace and one lucky fan will be selected to come to the control suite of “Big Hoss TV” and play against him in the video game NASCAR ’14 on the board.
NASCAR and Texas Motor Speedway have a large contingent of track-drying vehicles to combat the inclement weather consisting of five state-of-the-art Air Titan 2 trucks, three Air Titans and six jet trucks. Given the track-drying equipment, an expected break in the weather and that Texas Motor Speedway has lights, all efforts will be made to get in the race today.(TMS)(4-6-2014)

  • Teams could use the “Big Hoss TV” for strategy: It sits on the backstretch, dwarfing the facility’s standard-sized billboards as it rises up against the Texas sky. At 94.6 feet tall and 218 feet wide, “Big Hoss TV,” the largest High-Definition LED video board in the world, personifies the attitude here at Texas Motor Speedway — bigger and bolder. ‘Big Hoss’ has been busy this weekend, whether it’s broadcasting the day’s on-track activities or playing “Smokey and the Bandit” Thursday night in the midst of a lightning storm. The screen is more than just eye candy for Texas Motor Speedway. The video board’s size and clarity means that it could come into play on Sunday as the Duck Commander 500 unfolds. The screen, built to give fans a better race-day experience, may also have the watchful eyes of drivers, crew chiefs and spotters upon it. “We’ve had Sprint Vision televisions around the track before, and sometimes we’d be able to catch up or watch during yellows,” #18-Kyle Busch said. “Certainly the crew guys or even the spotters can pick up on it on ‘Big Hoss,’ and the spotters being up on the roof and watching the leaders or watching different lines — you can see all that from the roof, but they can see a little bit better (on ‘Big Hoss’) from the cameras zooming in on the cars and see what’s going on. So yeah, it’s definitely an option to use that.”(NASCAR.com)(4-6-2014)
  • Dillon to standby for Dillon at Texas UPDATE: Rookie of the Year contender, #3-Austin Dillon, is feeling a little under the weather. His brother, Nationwide Rookie of the Year candidate and past Texas race winner in the Camping World Truck Series, Ty Dillon, ran a few laps in the #3 DOW Chevy during Happy Happy practice at Texas in case Austin needs relief during the race Sunday or qualifying Saturday afternoon.(FS1 Practice Coverage)(4-5-2014)
UPDATE: While the weather at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday morning was cloudy, Sprint Cup rookie Austin Dillon was definitely under the weather. Apparently having flu-like symptoms, Dillon took to the track for 28 practice laps – recording a best of just 186.220 mph (at 28.998 seconds), far off the pace of the fastest of the pack – and brought the car back into the garage. But Dillon would get a second burst of energy late in the session, climbing back into his No. 3 Richard Childress Chevrolet and pumped out a much more respectable effort of 192.623 mph, good for 23rd on the speed charts. Younger brother Ty watched Austin’s early practice runs from atop the team’s hauler and then climbed into his brother’s car, prepared to take some practice laps of his own. Ty went out and ran just four laps, with a top lap of 30.810 seconds, which was under 180 mph. Crew chief Gil Martin feels Austin Dillon will be able to race Sunday unless he has a relapse. And if Ty starts the race, Austin would not get any Sprint Cup points, which would hurt – especially since Austin is currently ninth in the standings heading into Sunday’s race, 48 points behind series leader #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr.(NBC Sports)(4-6-2014)
  • Haas’s US team to be given green light into F1 by next year UPDATE: Bernie Ecclestone has revealed that a new team run by an American businessman is on track to join Formula One next year. It will become the sport’s 12th team and the first from America since the 1980s. Formula One has not had an American driver since 2007. The team is run by Gene Haas, the joint owner of the championship-winning Stewart-Haas Racing team [#4, #10, #14, #41], which competes in America’s NASCAR stock car series. “I think Haas will be accepted,” said Ecclestone, the sport’s chief executive. “They have got the money but it’s a question of whether they are going to spend it.” In addition to his stake in the NASCAR team, Haas is also the founder of leading American engineering firm Haas Automation, which has annual revenues of around $1bn (£600m). It gives him the resources to fuel his bid and he is already using it to attract top names, as Günther Steiner, a former technical director of the four-time Formula One champions Red Bull Racing, is understood to be involved.(The Independent)(4-3-2014)
UPDATE: Formula One commercial chief Bernie Ecclestone says a U.S. backed team headed by Gene Haas is among two new teams the sport is likely to admit next season. Speaking on Sunday ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, Ecclestone said he had held discussions with the sport’s governing body, the FIA, and there was agreement about expanding the grid next season. “They will be accepted, and we’ve also accepted another team as well, although whether they’ll make it or not is another story,” Ecclestone said when asked about a possible Haas entry. I’ve spoken to (FIA President) Jean Todt and we agreed yesterday.” The initial deadline for a decision on new 2015 entries expired at the end of February, but an agreement between Ecclestone and the FIA would likely be able to override that deadline.(ESPN/AP)(4-6-2014)
