With NASCAR on a temporary hiatus, news is going to be slow in the coming weeks. - NASCAR looking for ways to prevent airborne crashes: On Tuesday, however, NASCAR was searching for ways to slow cars down at Daytona International Speedway. Joey Logano was one of five drivers participating in an aerodynamic exercise focussed on discouraging lift-off on vehicles at restrictor plate tracks.[More](4-14-2017)
2010:
- Kahne to Hendrick in 2012 UPDATE 2 HMS PR: #9-Kasey Kahne, the hottest potential free agent in NASCAR entering the season, has signed a multiyear agreement to join Hendrick Motorsports in 2011, multiple sources close to negotiations confirmed to ESPN.com Tuesday. The details of the deal, such as which car Kahne will drive, are still being finalized, sources said. The prevailing thought is Kahne will occupy the #5 car currently driven by Mark Martin, sources said. Martin signed a contract extension last year through the 2011 season. There is room for Martin and Kahne in the Hendrick family. Stewart Haas Racing receives chassis, engines and technical support from HMS. So Kahne could be housed there until Martin’s contract was up, if necessary. In 2008 Dale Earnhardt Jr. signed a five-year deal with Hendrick. Jimmie Johnson last year signed an extension through 2015, and Jeff Gordon has a lifetime contract. Kahne is in the final year of his contract with Richard Petty Motorsports, and plans to finish the season in the #9 Ford, sources said. It is unknown whether Kahne’s sponsor, Budweiser, will accompany him to HMS [which sponsored Hendrick’s #25 Chevy for years]. Hendrick Motorsports officials had no comment. Calls placed to Kahne, who turned 30 last weekend, and to his agent were not returned.(ESPN)
UPDATE: Richard Petty Motorsports announced that driver Kasey Kahne has informed the team he will not renew his contract at the conclusion of the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. Kahne, driver the #9 Budweiser Ford Fusion, has been with RPM since entering NASCAR’s premier series in 2004. “Kasey is a very talented driver and I have enjoyed watching him race. We all wish him nothing but the best and hope he succeeds in anything he chooses to do,” said team owner Richard Petty. “Drivers like Kasey Kahne are the very reason we got into this sport. Kasey has helped us get to where we are today,” George Gillett, owner of Richard Petty Motorsports said. “We wish him well in his future however we have the rest of this season to race together and we’re looking forward to a successful remainder of the year.”(RPM)(4-13-2010)
MORE: It was reported initially that Kahne’s deal with Hendrick would begin in 2011. A source close to the situation told ESPN.com that Kahne will take over the #5 car for the 2012 season, but his 2011 plans are still undecided. “I’ve actually thought a lot about that but I’m not sure what I’m going to do next year,” Kahne said after taking batting practice with the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park on Tuesday. “I’ve given it some thought though.” Sources confirm that Mark Martin will drive the #5 car through the 2011 season. UPDATE2 – HMS PR: Beginning with the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, Kasey Kahne will drive the #5 Chevys of Hendrick Motorsports after signing a long-term contract with the organization. Mark Martin, 51, the current driver of Hendrick Motorsports’ #5 team, will complete the 2010 and 2011 seasons. When Kahne takes over in 2012, he will join teammates Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in Hendrick’s four-car stable. “In Kasey, we saw an opportunity to cement a big piece of our future,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “He possesses incredible talent and a tremendous dedication to his craft, and we know he’ll be a great fit within our company. Kasey has earned the respect of his future teammates by the way he’s handled himself on and off the racetrack, and we know he’ll be a contributor to the success of Hendrick Motorsports for many years to come. To have someone of his caliber join our team is an unbelievable opportunity for us.”
“I have a comfort level with Mr. Hendrick, my future teammates and the culture of the organization,” said Kahne, whose contract with Hendrick Motorsports will run through the 2015 Sprint Cup season. “For me, it’s the right fit on every level, and I think it gives me a great chance to win races and compete for championships. “Determining the next step in my career has been an important process, and I’m excited and relieved to have the decision made and announced. Now it’s my responsibility to put all of my energy into winning races and having a successful 2010 with my current team and our sponsors.” Although 2012 and beyond has been solidified, Kahne is not scheduled to drive a Hendrick Motorsports entry in 2011 due to NASCAR’s four-car limit. While who he will race for has not yet been determined, Kahne intends to drive a full Sprint Cup Series schedule next season. “If this opportunity was going to happen, I knew having some unanswered questions would be part of the scenario at this stage,” Kahne acknowledged. “Hendrick Motorsports has a commitment to Mark Martin that they want to fulfill, and that’s important. - Jim France stepping down as CEO of ISC: Jim France will step down as chief executive officer of International Speedway Corporation effective June 1 with Lesa Kennedy succeeding him in that role. Jim France is the son of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., brother of former NASCAR chairman Bill France Jr. and uncle of current NASCAR chairman Brian France. Brian France is Lesa Kennedy’s brother. Jim France will retain his role as chairman of ISC’s board of directors. Lesa Kennedy will remain vice chair of the ISC board. John Saunders, currently the executive vice president and chief operating officer of ISC, will take over as ISC president – the title previously held by Lesa Kennedy.(Charlotte Observer)(4-14-2009)
2007:
- Childress running the #3…..in Late Models with grandson: NASCAR fans often ask Richard Childress when he’ll bring back the black #3 Chevrolet made famous by the late Dale Earnhardt. Fans who attended last Saturday’s dirt-track races at 311 Speedway know the answer. And they know that Childress, who has said since Earnhardt’s death that it would take a unique situation to bring back the best-known number in NASCAR, stayed true to his word. The driver he chose to run #3 is young and talented, clean-cut and polite and thinks the world of Childress. He’s Childress’ oldest grandson, Austin Dillon. Based on the way he drove in his first Super Late Model race, there may come a day when Dillon is behind the wheel of a similar-looking car in NASCAR. In his first try in dirt racing’s elite division, Dillon qualified fifth from a field of more than 30, then drove like a veteran, broad-sliding through the corners, stepping on the accelerator to make the car turn and challenging the drivers in front of him on almost every lap. Childress watched from the top of the team hauler, just as he has done for decades during Nextel Cup races. Every pass brought a big smile to his face. “He’s driving the heck out of it,” Childress said. “He’s doing good for a 16-year-old kid.” Childress dotes on his grandsons, Austin and Ty, who is two years younger than Austin and beginning his own racing career. 2006:
Martin part-time Cup in 2007? #6-Mark Martin is hedging on his vow to not return to Nextel Cup in any part-time capacity after moving to a full-time Craftsman Truck Series ride next year. He now says if the right opportunity presents itself, he might consider doing Cup races that run in conjunction with truck events.(Tampa Tribune)(4-14-2006)

- Harvick Parked for Martinsville, Kenny Wallace in the #29 for the race: Winston Cup driver #29-Kevin Harvick has been “parked” by NASCAR officials and will not be allowed to drive in Sunday’s Virginia 500 at Martinsville Speedway, NASCAR officials confirmed Sunday morning. A formal announcement of the action is expected at the track Sunday morning. Kenny Wallace will drive Harvick’s #29 GM Goodwrench Chevy Sunday. He would have to start at the rear of the field since he did not qualify the car. Harvick’s “parking” – defined in the NASCAR rulebook as an emergency action that is “final, non-appealable and non-reviewable” – comes in response to NASCAR officials’ demand he park his truck after spinning Coy Gibbs in Saturday’s CTS race at Martinsville. Harvick and Gibbs tangled on the track several times over the course of several laps. Gibbs spun
Harvick one time exiting Turn 4. Following a caution on Lap 188, Harvick rammed Gibbs’ rear bumper entering Turn 1 and finally spun him exiting Turn 2. NASCAR had enough, black-flagged Harvick and parked him for the day. Harvick parked his #6 Chevy in front of the Truck series hauler near pit road. He was told to report to the NASCAR hauler and met with series officials for nearly 90 minutes following the race. Harvick was already under probation from his post-race incident with Greg Biffle at the BGN race at Bristol last month. Harvick was fined $15,000 and placed on probation until Aug. 28. After Sunday’s race, Harvick may receive a more traditional suspension, which could be appealed under NASCAR rules, sources said.(ThatsRacin.com), also see NASCAR.com: The Buzz: Harvick suspension imminent? and Harvick ordered to meet with NASCAR after incident. AND from the Kenny Wallace site: An emergency call sends Kenny Wallace to Martinsville. NASCAR and Richard Childress called DEI to release Wallace for the Martinsville race. Wallace drove to Martinsville and is staying with bother Rusty for the night.AND RacingOne.com reports that a press conference with #29 car owner Richard Childress was scheduled for 9:00am/et at Martinsville Speedway, while Harvick was to address the media at 10:00am/et.AND NASCAR.com announces: Harvick not allowed to drive in Virginia 500: NASCAR’s statement: “NASCAR officials have announced they have “parked” NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Kevin Harvick until the conclusion of the Virginia 500 NASCAR Winston Cup event at Martinsville Speedway. Harvick, on probation following an incident at Bristol Motor Speedway March 23 for actions during a NASCAR Busch Series event, was parked during Saturday’s Advance Auto Parts 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event. That time has been extended, preventing him, but not the No. 29 RCR Winston Cup team, from participating through the completion of the event at Martinsville.”(4-14-2002)
2000:
- New Yates Sponsor in 2001? UPDATE 3: Dale Jarrett will apparently have a new sponsor next season on the #88 Robert Yates owned Ford. UPS(United Parcel Service), supposedly a $15 million or $16 million sponsorship deal, sources said. Ford’s Quality Care sponsorship would likely move to a Jack Roush team, according to PitNow sources(PitNow)(4-3-2000)
UPDATE: I hear from a good source that Robert Yates Racing(RYR) is working with Ford to continue it’s relationship/sponsorship with the #88 and are working with UPS on an associate sponsorship on the #28 Texaco Ford(4-4-2000)
UPDATE 2: Rumors recently surfaced that Robert Yates was considering a switch from Ford Credit to UPS as primary sponsor for the Dale Jarrett #88 race team in 2001. The more likely scenario here is that UPS, who has been itching to get into Winston Cup racing with a strong team for about a year, will come on board as an associate sponsor on one or BOTH Yates Racing Fords(Inside Motorsports)(4-9-2000)
UPDATE 3: This weeks Winston Cup Scene Magazine reports that UPS is talking to Yates and Roush Racing about sponsoring a car. #28 and #88 owner Robert Yates confirmed he is talking to UPS but wouldn’t say if it was for an associate or primary deal for one or both cars. Yates deal with Ford Quality Care is done at the end of the 2000 season. Roush Racing said they had informal talks but that was it and that Roush Racing is working on renewals with Valvoline and John Deere for the #6 and #97 teams(4-14-2000)
1997:
- The Food City 500 at Bristol this past weekend tied a record for the most cautions in a WC series event with the yellow flag coming out 20 times, tying the mark at Bristol in 1989. The starting field at Bristol used to be set at 36 cars, but a change in the NASCAR rules, which allows up to 43 cars in the field for any race, allowed the maximum to start this year’s event. The caution flag flew for 132 laps(4-14-97)
