The Scene Vault: Darrell Waltrip … The Beginning Of The End

By Rick Houston

After winning the final Winston Cup races of his career in 1992, Darrell Waltrip struggled mightily the following season.

Now an owner-driver, Waltrip had chosen to start his own engine program. Although it was a decision that bit him hard early on, Waltrip felt that he and his team had started to dig itself out of the hole by the start of the 1995 season.

A wreck with Dale Earnhardt in that season’s The Winston all-star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway erased that momentum … and served as the beginning of the end for Waltrip as a competitive race car driver. This is his story.
