Bouncing from this bulling to that as a young Modified driver, Ray Evernham dreamed of racing in the Indianapolis 500.
It was a passion that fueled him. Yet even after he hit up the iconic Roger Penske for a ride, the goal never quite worked out.
That love and respect for Indy, however, never waned. So even though it was Jeff Gordon who drove into victory lane there after winning the inaugural Brickyard 400, it might very well have been Evernham who had the biggest smile.
