William Byron wins DAYTONA 500 under caution after frenetic next-to-last lap: William Byron gave team owner Rick Hendrick something extra to celebrate in the 40th anniversary year of Hendrick Motorsports. #24-William Byron won the Daytona 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Monday. The win is his 1st Daytona 500 win, 2nd win at Daytona and 11th of his career.
#48-Alex Bowman finished 2nd followed by #20-Christopher Bell, #7-Corey LaJoie, #23-Bubba Wallace, #16-A.J. Allmendinger, #42-John Hunter Nemechek, #43-Erik Jones, #10-Noah Gragson, and #14-Chase Briscoe.
The race was relatively calm. However, there was a big wreck with 6 laps remaining that involved 23 cars and required a 15 minute red flag for track cleanup.  The race ended under caution when #24-Byron took the white flag just before an accident involving #1-Ross Chastain and #2-Austin Cindric.
Pole Sitter #22-Joey Logano lead several times throughout the race but was caught in the big accident with 8 laps remaining. He finished 32nd.
#9-Chase Elliott won Stage 1. #12-Blaney won Stage 2.
There were 41 lead changes among 20 drivers and 5 cautions for 18 yellow flag laps.
The average speed of the race was: 157.178mph.
The race was run on Monday afternoon due to heavy rains Sunday at the track.

12:40pm/et – Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass reports that all drivers planning to do double duty in Xfinity and Cup have not changed their minds and will participate in both races.
12:15pm/et – There was a slight delay in track drying when two jet dryers collided, spilling fuel on the track.
11:30am/et – Rain has moved out of the area and track drying is underway. The race is expected to get underway on time. FOX will come on the air at 4:00pm/et. The green flag is scheduled for 4:30pm/et.

Field set for Daytona 500: With the conclusion of the Bluegreen Vacations Duels, the lineup is set for Sunday’s Daytona 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway.
#22-Joey Logano and #34-Michael McDowell earned the front row based on their qualifying speeds Wednesday night.
The rest of the top 10: #45-Tyler Reddick, #20-Christopher Bell, #9-Chase Elliott, #2-Austin Cindric, #48-Alex Bowman, #11-Denny Hamlin, #77-Carson Hocevar and #42-John Hunter Nemechek.
After the front row, the odd numbered starting positions were based on the finishes in Duel 1, the even number positions were based on Duel 2 finishing spots.

#36-Kaz Grala, in 12th, was the top finishing open driver and will race Sunday.

Lap 22 – #84-Johnson currently runs 6th.  He needs to finish ahead of #44-Yeley to make the race.  Yeley is running 20th, the last car in the lead pack.
Lap 20 – #47-Stenhouse takes the lead back.
Lap 19 – #7-LaJoie takes the lead from #47-Stenhouse.
Lap 15 – Race is 25% complete and all green so far.  The first Duel race is typically pretty calm.  Teams will need to pit once during the race.  #47-Stenhouse still leads. #43-Jones, #19-Truex, #99-Suarez, and #7-LaJoie round out the top 5.
Lap – 11 – #47-Stenhouse takes the lead.
Lap 10 – #62-Alfredo has fallen to the end of the field.  He’s locked into the Daytona 500 on his qualifying speed so he’s not going to risk the car.
Lap 5 – #43-Jones leads #99-Suarez, #19-Truex, #5-Larson, and #47-Stenhouse. #22-Logano has fallen to 11th.

#34-Michael McDowell will start the race in second.
The rest of the field will be set after the Duel races on Thursday night. Qualifying sets the lineup for those races.

The fastest two open team drivers: #62-Anthony Alfredo and #60-David Ragan are guaranteed a starting position in the race based on their qualifying speeds. Their starting spots for the race will be determined by their finish in the Duels.
The remaining open drivers: #84-Jimmie Johnson, #78-B.J. McLeod, #44-J.J. Yeley, and #36-Kaz Grala will have to race their way in. The top open driver in each Duel makes the race.  The two others will not qualify.
