H.B. Bailey, who spent 32 years as a driver in NASCAR’s Winston Cup Series, is resting in Methodist Hospital following a stroke late Friday. Bailey, 61, is in stable condition and was scheduled to undergo tests early this week. Bailey began his Winston Cup career after buying a Pontiac from Bud Moore in 1962, and raced Pontiacs virtually his entire career. His last race gained him a bit of notoriety: he drove the first car to attempt pole qualifying in the inaugural Brickyard 400 in 1994. Bailey’s son, Joe Dan Bailey, serves as car chief for Penske-Kranefuss Racing in Mooresville, NC, a career he began with his father. (08-05-1998)- Bailey also attempted to qualify the #66 Pontiac owned by Michelle Bailey last year at Texas and ran a Winston West race last year as well at Pikes Peak and finished 17th. – Bailey ran three Winston West races in 1997: Las Vegas, July 7, finished 15th; Pikes Peak, July 27,finished 17th and Las Vegas, November 26, finished 26th. Also Bailey was to attempt the Texas Cup race but all qualifying got rained out and the field was set on Owners Points, which he of course had none.( Winston West Page ), no further word on Bailey’s condition.
