Earl H. “Bub” Strickler, 66, of Elkton, VA died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Strickler was born Dec. 18, 1938, in Rockingham County and was the son of the late Lucy Dinges. He owned and operated Body repair shops in the Rockingham and Shenandoah County areas for a number of years and also in Charlotte, N.C. He was a race car driver who drove short tracks in Virginia, including East Side Speedway and in North Carolina, later for NASCAR Winston Cup from 1961 to 1985 [21 starts 2 top 10’s]. He was involved in an accident in the Rebel 300 at Darlington in 1965 that was featured on Wide World of Sports for a number of years. Surviving are a son, Mitch Strickler of New Market; a daughter, Connie Fulton of Elkton; two brothers, Jimmy Strickler of Broadway and Butch Dinges of Dayton; four sisters, Elsie Long of Charlotte, N.C., Anna Sprouse of Broadway, and Frances Walton and Lucy Rhinehart, both of New Market; one grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.
