Burney Lamar signed with NASCAR Nextel Cup star Kevin Harvick as a developmental driver and the two laid out a two-year plan. But a sudden rise to prominence has accelerated Lamar’s career path. The 25-year old driver was expected to spend most of this season competing in NASCAR’s Southwest and West divisions with the possibility of running some Truck races on short tracks such as Martinsville and Memphis. That all changed when he won in his second career West start driving for Harvick at Phoenix. Lamar recently tested #92 Chevrolet Silverado in preparation for the Sept. 24 Las Vegas 350. “Las Vegas will be my first Truck race, and we are going to plan on running the Busch race in Kansas and some others. This has come together much quicker than I expected.” Lamar is set to make his Craftsman Truck Series debut at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His only other appearance at LVMS was a Southwest Series race in 2001 in which he was caught up in a multi-car accident early in the race. Lamar, who will have to qualify on time because his truck is not in the top 30 in owner points, spent most the test session under the watchful eye of NASCAR veteran and former Truck champion Ron Hornaday.(Las Vegas Motor Speedway PR)(9-21-2005)
