#20-Tony Stewart, the points leader, won the Budweiser Pole for the Subway 500 at Martinsville Speedway with a Track Record lap of 98.083mph for his 3rd pole of 2005 and 10th of his career. The rest of the top five are: #21-Ricky Rudd, #2-Rusty Wallace, #12-Ryan Newman and #11-Denny Hamlin. #4-Mike Wallace was the highest non top-35 team, starting 27th. Five drivers failed to make the race: #92-Chad Chaffin, #4-Joey McCarthy, #00-Carl Long, #75-Mike Garvey and #89-Morgan Shepherd [ran past the 5-minute clock to fix the car]. #61-Wayne Anderson withdrew after only running 2 laps in practice.
