Jeff Gordon won practice then won the Bud Pole today at Phoenix International Raceway for Sunday’s Checker Auto Parts “500” presented by Pennzoil with a time of 26.773 (134.464 mph) for his second top-spot of the season (he captured the point at Dover in September) and the 56th of his Nextel Cup career. Wonder how many times they’ll start a question with “Since this is one of the tracks you’ve never won at”…. Kevin Harvick will join Gordon on the front row.
Dale Earnhardt Jr (4th) has his best starting spot since he lined up 4th at Dover in September of 2005!.
Joe Nemechek (5th) has his best starting spot since he timed in 5th at Dover in September.
Michael Waltrip (19th) has his best starting spot since he qualified 19th at Daytona in July.
Ward Burton (24th) has his best starting spot since he lined up 4th at Martinsville in October of 2004 (only five races).
Welcome to Brandon Whitt (37th). He’ll make his first ever Nextel Cup start in the #72 Dutch Quality Stone Chevy. He has a Craftsman Truck Series win on his resume….at Memphis in July of 2005.
