- Robert Yates, owner of the #28 and #88 Cup cars was not be at the race track in Texas Sunday as he recently had surgery to have cysts removed from his right wrist and foot. No more details at this time(TNN’s Inside NASCAR)(4-5-98)
- Chuck Rider, owner of the #30 Gumout Pontiac, has decided to keep Derrike Cope out of the next race, on 4/19 at Martinsville. Rider said he plans to ask Jeff Green to drive the car at Martinsville. Diamond Ridge Motorsports will not enter Green’s #29 Chevrolet at Martinsville, so Green would be available as a substitute driver. Had Rider’s team earned a provisional this week, Green would have driven the car at Texas.(That’s Racin’)(4-5-98)
- The owners of the Washington-Erving Motorsports team, Joe Washington and Julius Erving were at TMS Saturday to watch their BGN #50 Dr. Pepper Ford team race and to take part in a promotion involving local Boy and Girl Scouts which has a show car program with the Boy Scouts. What it does not have yet is a Winston Cup team. Sponsorship seems to be the made problem. Erving said a couple of deals came close and efforts to find a sponsor continue. The team still wants to get a Winston Cup car on the track by the end of the season. Erving said Rich Bickle, who had signed a letter of intent to drive for the team, still would be considered a candidate for that job despite the fact Bickle has expressed his displeasure with the long delay.(That’s Racin’)(4-5-98)
- Greg Sacks was taken to the hospital after the nasty accident at Texas. He was alert. They are taking x-ray’s and he will spend the night for observation. Mike Skinner was taken to the hospital with a possible broken right shoulder(4-5-98)
- The stat I had up earlier about the Hendrick teams being in the top 10 in every race since Sears Point in 1993 was incorrect as as recently as Atlanta in 11/97 that did not happen as the #24 was 17th as the highest finishing Hendrick car, sorry about that(4-5-98)
- Also I hear that NASCAR says that if they did not think the track was safe they would not be there. The track will be looked at, they want to put on a good show
for the fans in the area but they will be monitoring drivers today about conditions. Also said that the track will be looked at after this weekend, something is going to have to be done and that NASCAR wants a track that is dry, safe and does not have potholes.(4-5-98) - Tom Lorenz and Ted Smokstad, BGN drivers involved in crashes on Friday, were both listed in good condition at Parkland Hospital on Saturday. Lorenz has a concussion; Smokstad has a broken shoulder.(That’s Racin’)(4-5-98)
