April 20 – Today in Jayski’s NASCAR history

  • Weather could be an issue at Bristol this weekend NASCAR has had a good run of seven weeks of mostly rain free weather. The only exceptions were the Cash at Daytona, a non points race, and the Friday at Martinsville where practice and qualifying were both washed out. It appears the dry weather luck runs out at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend. Forecasting the weather around Bristol Motor Speedway is always complicated, especially when you are dealing with the terrain around the track. The mountains and hills that make up the region can give meteorologist’s fit. While we expect rain showers and storms to fall during the weekend not every moment of every day is soaking wet. We expect some dry time as we go through the weekend. The question is, which days are drier than the others? (see full post and forecasts at SB Nation / Brian Neudorff) or check out the Bristol Race Info page – weather link section.[More](4-20-2017)
  • Kenseth hopes to race full-time in 2018 So how would #20-Matt Kenseth handle retirement? “I probably just wouldn’t show up at Daytona and just everybody say was Matt racing this week? Or I’d send out like a four-word tweet. I don’t know if I’d announce it all.” In other words, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver hasn’t considered the proposition? “Not really.” How many more years does the 2003 champion plan to race? “Fifteen to 20,” he said with typical deadpan. “If Tom Brady can play football at 40 and still win Super Bowls, I think 45 is pretty young to try to win races.” Still, it’s notable that neither Kenseth nor team owner Joe Gibbs definitively said he would be in the #20 in 2018. Gibbs said the Circle K deal is multiyear, so does that mean Kenseth will be with the team in 2018? “I mean, I hope so,” Keneseth said. “That’s always my hope. The details of the sponsorship I mostly don’t know. That would have to come from Coach or somebody there. I don’t know any real details except the races they’re on the car this year.”(NBC Sports)[More](4-20-2017)

  • CSX and Cassill Promote ‘Trees for Tracks’ at Bristol Landon Cassill’s yellow and blue #34 CSX “Play It Safe” Ford will have a splash of green added for Earth Day this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. The #34 Fusion will promote CSX’s “Trees for Tracks” program, in which the transportation company aims to plant 42,000 trees by 2018. The Jacksonville, Fla.-based railroad initially launched “Trees for Tracks” in 2009 with the goal of planting 21,000 trees – one for every mile of its track in the United States. After reaching that milestone, CSX extended the effort by doubling its goal. In addition to including “Trees for Tracks” messages on the #34 Ford, CSX will also produce a limited-edition Cassill autograph card printed on seed paper to promote tree planting.(Front Row Motorsports)[More](4-20-2017)
