The Joe Gibbs Racing driver said it’s almost 100% he will at least start the May 5 race at Talladega. Hamlin was expected to miss six weeks after suffering a compression fracture in his lower back on the last lap of the March 24 race at Auto Club Speedway. That would have put his scheduled return at the May 11 race at Darlington. But Hamlin said if the follow-up scan of the fracture that will take place either late Tuesday or early Wednesday shows bone growth he will be in the car at his home track in Richmond if doctors give him clearance. “If everything works out, and if the scan looks the way I feel we’re going to be in good shape for Richmond,” Hamlin said after the final practice for Sunday’s race at Kansas. “I feel there’s been growth there. I feel I’ve gotten stronger. Everything is a lot better. Last week, I would have said probably not. But this week I feel a lot better.” Hamlin said there won’t be another scan for two weeks after this week’s. Even if he is not given clearance for Richmond, the plan is to start Talladega to collect driver points and give way to a backup driver after the first caution. Hamlin said there is no consideration for starting and then putting a backup driver in at Richmond because he would lose at least two laps making the exchange at the three-quarter mile track. Hamlin said he’s been off pain medicine for a week and a half, so that won’t be an issue with getting medical clearance. He is confident after looking at the crash data from Auto Club Speedway that it would be tough to duplicate what led to his injury.(full story at ESPN.com)(4-20-2013)
- Keselowski says parts were approved: #2-Brad Keselowski says the parts that NASCAR confiscated from his car and Penske Racing teammate #22-Joey Logano’s last week at Texas Motor Speedway were approved. NASCAR says the parts from the rear end housing were not approved. That will be at issue when the National Stock Car Racing Commission hears Penske Racing’s appeal to the fines, suspensions and point deductions issued on Tuesday. “Obviously, we’re in an agree-to-disagree stage between Penske Racing and NASCAR,” Keselowski said on Friday at Kansas Speedway. “And, thankfully, there’s a third group to settle those disagreements.” Keselowski and Logano were docked 25 points each. Their crew chiefs, car chiefs and lead engineers — as well as Keselowski team manager Travis Geisler — were suspended for six point races and the All-Star race. Those suspensions won’t begin until after the appeal, and then only if they are upheld. No date has been given. But Keselowski believes Penske Racing has a case just as Hendrick Motorsports had one last year when it appealed penalties against Jimmie Johnson’s team for an illegal C-post. Most of those penalties were reversed on the second and final level of appeal. “Yeah, there’s definitely some similarities,” Keselowski said. “I’m not going to say it’s an identical situation, but there definitely are some similarities.” The difference, according to NASCAR, is it was emphatic no changes could be made to the rear-end housings late last season. That, according to many in the garage, was re-emphasized repeatedly during the offseason.(ESPN)(4-20-2013)
- Clorox partners with #47 & #42 teams for 100th Anniversary: The Clorox Company announced today they are partnering with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates and JTG Daugherty Racing to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of their iconic brand for the weekend in Talladega, Ala. from May 3-5, 2013. Bobby Labonte, Driver, #47 Clorox Toyota Camry: “The Clorox Company has been a partner of JTG Daugherty Racing for over a decade and that’s pretty special to Tad and Jodi (Geschickter), Brad (Daugherty) and the entire racing organization. I am pleased that we are able to use our race team to support my hometown with a ‘Prayers for Boston’ message.”
Driver of the #30 “Prayers for Boston” Toyota, David Stremme, said, “The NASCAR community rallies together in times of need. Hopefully, we can help add a little comfort with our message of ‘Prayers for Boston’ on the car.” Earlier this year Swan Racing honored the victims of the Newtown tragedy with a special paint scheme and by changing the car number from 30 to 26 in honor of the 26 victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School.(Swan Racing), see an image of the car on the #30 Team Schemes page.(4-20-2013) - Gase, Go Green Racing team up for Richmond: After driving a partial schedule the last two seasons for Go Green Racing, the team is excited to announce the return of Iowa native, Joey Gase. - Potential changes to front of trucks in the works: NASCAR has had preliminary discussions with its three manufacturers to discuss the possibility of a makeover for the vehicles in the Camping World Truck Series. Truck Series director Chad Little confirmed that a meeting was held earlier this month at the NASCAR Research and Development Center to debate modifications would be made but nothing is “concrete.” Little added that the manufacturers, Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota, presented a plan that would involve an update to the front end. Potential changes include a shorter nose, narrower front end and alterations to the bumpers, headlights and grilles. The timing makes sense since there will be redesigned Silverados, F150s and Tundras in the showrooms later this season.(FOX Sports) (4-20-2013)
