- Two fans who are helping Billy Standridge with his fan-supported Winston Cup team recently were selected as the ‘Fan of the Race’ and honorary pit crew member for the 4/5 Texas 500. Scott Hunt, from Lake Como, PA, is the honorary crew member, and Willie Ingle of Ellenboro, NC, is the fan for that event. Ingle will get his picture on the #47 Ford Taurus deck lid(WC Scene)(3-21-98)
- Bud Moore Engineering has dissolved its proposed partnership with the Steele family and plans to return to WC soon. The team is looking for a sponsor and is converting its Tbirds to Tauruses and hopes to get back on the track soon. The team plans on hiring a part-time driver to fill in until Steele is ready to return(WC Scene)(3-21-98)
- I hear conflicting reports that Darrell Waltrip will take the #1 ride, while reports from Friday have DW’s team sold and DW retaining that seat as driver only(3-21-98)
- UPDATE: “Rumors are spreading that NASCAR found a spring operated mechanism on the trunk lid of one of the cars they took to the wind tunnel. The device reportedly could be locked out for inspection but then released to allow air pressure to push the trunk down, removing more of the spoiler from the air steam. If this is in fact the case we will all hear about it soon when NASCAR publicly clobbers the individual with an impressive fine.”(Tom Hintz – Thinkin’ Racing)(3-15-98) – I hear that this was just a rumor and did not happen and that all the cars taken to the wind tunnel were legal(3-21-98)
- Gene Nead, crew chief for Phil Parsons’ Busch Series team, has been suspended indefinitely by NASCAR. Tim Sullivan, a spokesman for the sanctioning body, said only that Nead was involved in a fight Friday night and was suspended for “activity detrimental to the sport.” The trouble Friday apparently stemmed from a confrontation a week ago during the Busch Series race at Nashville, Tenn. Nead showed up at Darlington Raceway Saturday, but was escorted from the grounds by security personnel.(WRAL)(3-21-98)
- The #96 Buz McCall Caterpillar Chevy team may have Robby Gordon test one of their cars at an upcoming test at Charlotte(NSSN)(3-21-98)
- Second round qualifying proved to be most interesting. Kenny Wallace cut a lap of 168.30mph which would have had him on the front row if he had done it on Friday. For info on who had to use provisionals and who went home see Jayski’s Provisional Page.(3-21-98)
- Ron Hornaday backed the #1 Pennzoil Chevy into the turn 4 wall early in second round practice. The team had to go to a back up. Jeff Green also destroyed his
primary car, in morning practice. Team Monte Carlo and Taz will be back on the #29 at Darlington(3-21-98) - Hut Stricklin, who drives the car sponsored by Richmond, Va.-based Circuit City, still hasn’t found a permanent crew chief or a full-time engineer. After crew chief Bill Ingle left the team to join Ricky Rudd after last month’s Daytona 500, Stricklin had hoped to have a new man in place by this weekend. As it is, Stricklin is 42nd in the points standings. He said his car owner, Bill Stavola, hasn’t given him any indication he should be worried about his job.(Skip Wood/Times-Dispatch)(3-21-98)
- Kathryn “Kat” Teasdale announced she will run five BGN races in 1998 and race for rookie of the year in 1999 and will make her debut in August on the road course
at Watkins Glen and also attempt Milwaukee, Indianapolis Raceway Park, Michigan and Dover.(WRAL/WC Scene)(3-21-98) - Watkins Glen has extended its contract with ESPN to televise NASCAR events through 2001(NSSN)(3-21-98)
