  • Gander Mountain Sponsors Gilliland at Martinsville: Gander Mountain will be the primary sponsor of Front Row Motorsports’ #37 Sprint Cup entry at the Martinsville Speedway on March 28. The car will be piloted by David Gilliland, currently 35th in driver point standings in the Sprint Cup Series. Gander Mountain became a sponsor because of the number of NASCAR fans who also enjoy the outdoors, according to Steve Uline, Gander Mountain’s executive vice president of marketing. The company will also sponsor Gilliland’s car for the August 1 Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway. “David Gilliland is an avid outdoorsman, as are many NASCAR fans,” Uline said. “One of David’s favorite pastimes outside of NASCAR is fishing. He understands Gander Mountain’s ‘We Live Outdoors’ culture and is the perfect driver to help us take our message to race fans.” Gander Mountain, with 119 stores in 23 states, is the nation’s largest retail network of stores for hunting, fishing, boating, camping, marine and outdoor lifestyle apparel, products and services. • Newman’s release 2nd book about pets: Last weekend, Ryan Newman and wife Krissie, released their second book Pit Road: NASCAR Stars and Their Pets, the Second Lap at Bristol Motor Speedway [a must read for Jayski’s pets]. The book celebrates the NASCAR community and their beloved furry and sometimes even feathered families. Pit Road Pets: NASCAR Stars and Their Pets, the Second Lap, gives fans an intimate look at some of NASCAR’s most loved drivers both past and present, their families and their love for animals. Crew chiefs, broadcast personalities and the people who work behind the scenes at races each weekend are all part of this picturesque book. The book is a follow-up to the Newman’s first Pit Road Pets book which was published in 2006. The book is available for $24.95 and the proceeds from the first book helped build a regional spay/neuter clinic at the Humane Society of Catawba County in Hickory, N.C. For more info and to order the book, see my Racing Charities page.(3-22-2010)
  • Johnson has won 7 of 14: After winning three of five races this season, #48-Jimmie Johnson has now won seven of the last 14, a NASCAR-best since Jeff Gordon won seven of nine in the summer of 1998. Supposedly the only other time this has happened in the modern era [1972 to present] was in 1987 when Dale Earnhardt won 6 of 8 and seven of the first 14. Both Gordon and Earnhardt won the championship that season.(Sports Illustrated)(3-22-2010)
  • McGrew and Dale Jr. on the radio at Bristol: Crew chief Lance McGrew didn’t hold back the tough love with driver #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Sunday.
The first snipe came after Junior complained about a loose car following pit stops during the fifth caution on Lap 205. McGrew replied, “Yes, but you’re eight positions better than you were.” When the seventh caution was called on Lap 324, the #88 was up to sixth and was busted by NASCAR for “excessive speed entering the pits” and was forced to drop back to 26th. McGrew coached his driver with a “lots of laps man, we can get this back.” But Earnhardt sounded dejected on the radio. He was furious at the sanctioning body and its pit-road scoring system. “Well, anyhow. To get busted at Bristol for (expletive) speeding by what-the-(expletive)-ever it was and when I didn’t (expletive) gain nothing on nobody, it’s not the way it should be,” exlaimed Earnhardt. “There should be a different way of doing it. You bust your (expletive) to get up there. Now they can’t be (expletive) (expletive) about every (expletive) little nitpickin’ (expletive) thing. We’re out here racing our (expletive) off.” And with Earnhardt deep in traffic, he radioed the car was “pushing like a truck.” That’s when McGrew let loose.“Don’t lay down on me, bud,” McGrew screamed. “I can’t lay down here,” Earnhardt replied. “This is Bristol. I don’t ever (freakin’) lay down. Don’t ever say that again on the radio. Don’t need the whole world hearing that.” While little was said between driver and crew chief following the heated exchange, Earnhardt collected himself and salvaged a seventh-place finish that enabled him to jump five positions to eighth in the point standings. Although Earnhardt was not available for comment after the race, team owner Rick Hendrick seemed pleased with the #88 team’s improvement. “They’ve worked really hard,” Hendrick said. “Lance and Dale have great chemistry. I think if you listen to them on the radio, they’re working well together. Dale had a great car. He would have been in the top five or had a real shot at it himself had he been able not to have that speeding penalty.”(FoxSports)(3-22-2010)

  • Wilson wins Scotts EZ Seed Showdown at BMS UPDATE 2: For Rick Wilson, it was de ja vu during Saturday’s Scotts EZ Seed Showdown at Bristol Motor Speedway. Wilson said the finish of the race played out just like his win in 1989 when he spun the wheels on a late race restart and saw drivers stream by him. “This was identical to the 1989 race,” said Wilson of Bartow, Fla. “The car was great and the key was getting out ahead early. I was just riding at one point, because I knew I had a great car. “It was just like 1989. Phil (Parsons) got around me on the restart, but I just waited and got back around. I wish we could have gone 200 laps.” Several other drivers echoed Wilson’s thoughts. Cale Yarborough was excited to behind the wheel again, but disappointed that it didn’t last longer. “It was fun,” he said, “just not long enough to do what I wanted to do. Something happened to the car.” Dave Marcis’ day also was cut short, but he was glad to lace up his famous wingtips once more. “I was having fun, the car was good, but I ran over something and it cut one of the belts,” he explained. “I think I got it shut off before I caused a lot of damage. It was fun and I enjoyed it. I’m glad to be back.” Jimmy Hensley was glad just to be on the track. “I wish I could have been more competitive,” he said. “I didn’t hit anything, so that was good.”(BMS)
AND Rick Wilson passed Phil Parsons with two laps to go to outlast 11 other retired NASCAR drivers Saturday in an exhibition race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Wilson, best known as the driver who took over the #43 following Richard Petty’s 1992 retirement, dominated the race but lost the lead late to Parsons. Wilson passed Parsons shortly after a restart following a lengthy red-flag for a frightening accident between Charlie Glotzbach and Larry Pearson. Pearson, the son of three-time NASCAR champion David Pearson, spun into the outside wall with five laps remaining. As his car slid down the banking, Glotzbach rounded Turn 2 and ran directly into Pearson’s driver-side door. Glotzbach gingerly walked from his car, but the roof had to be cut off Pearson’s car. He was placed onto a stretcher, but was moving his arms as he was loaded into an ambulance. Pearson, the winner of consecutive titles in what’s now called the Nationwide Series in 1986 and 1987, was immediately transported to Wellmont Regional Medical Center for further evaluation. Glotzbach, who won a caution-free Cup race at Bristol in 1971, was seen first in the infield care center before leaving for the same hospital. David Pearson did not continue the race after his son’s accident. He drove his car off the track and stopped racing after the ambulance left so that he could travel to the hospital.(ESPN/Associated Press)(3-20-2010)
UPDATE: Hours later, Jim Wozniak, a Welmont Health System spokesman, said Pearson would undergo surgery on a compound fracture of the left ankle, and that he suffered a fractured pelvis and fractured right hand. “He is awake and alert, and in good spirits,” Wozniak said of Pearson, who was listed in fair condition late Saturday night. Wozniak also said that Glotzbach was in good condition, but provided no further details regarding his injuries.(Bristol Herakd Courier)(3-21-2010)
UPDATE 2: Larry Pearson and Charlie Glotzbach, injured in the Showdown charity race at Bristol Motor Speedway Saturday, remain hospitalized Monday at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Their conditions are unchanged. Pearson is in fair condition and Glotzbach is in good condition.(BMS)(3-22-2010)
UPDATE3: Larry Pearson has been released from Bristol Regional Medical Center as of late Monday afternoon, March 22. Pearson was transported and will be admitted into Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, according to his family. Charlie Glotzbach remains hospitalized Monday at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Glotzbach remains in good condition. The two drivers were injured last Saturday in the Showdown charity race at Bristol Motor Speedway Saturday.(BMS)(3-22-2010)

  • Hornaday going back to “lucky shoes” for Martinsville: From Ron Hornaday’s Diary: Winning is great but what most people do not think about is the flip side of that: wrecking. Recently, I have been experiencing that more than I would like with my wrecks at Daytona and Atlanta to start the 2010 season and accidents definitely take a toll on the body. I commented after Atlanta that losing that tire and hitting the wall really hurt, but the fact that I continue to walk away unharmed after these impacts just speaks to NASCAR and all their safety innovations. I have had my share of crashes but I feel safer now than I ever have. After the wreck in Atlanta, I was a little sore and pretty disappointed, but I know that in racing you have your ups and downs. I do know one thing – when I get to Martinsville I’m going back to my old trusty, and perhaps lucky, shoes. Most people don’t know but I’m pretty superstitious. When I first started driving for Dale Earnhardt back in 1995, he taught me a lot of things that I hold to this day. When I walk through one door of a building, I have to go back out that same door. I do not carry $50 bills ever nor will I shell peanuts and eat them at the race track. I’m not a huge fan of the color green, either, and I really believe in routine. During our five-race winning streak last season, I wore the same old worn-out pair of shoes that I’ve had for years, but at the end of the season I went and bought a new pair of sneakers. The new ones are staying in the closet until this streak ends. I’m going back to my old worn-out pair to drive my bus up to Martinsville.(To read complete article visit: SPEEDtv-Hornaday Diary)(3-22-2010)

Tide will be featured on the orange and yellow truck’s hood and rear quarter panels, with Kroger Food Stores, Bounce, Iams, Pringles, Charmin, Bounty and Downy on the quarter panels and tonneau cover. This weekend, Harvick will be reunited with former crew chief Butch Hylton. Harvick and Hylton were first paired in 2003 in the Nationwide Series, winning three races and eight poles as driver/crew chief at Richard Childress Racing. (Kevin Harvick Inc. PR)(3-22-2010)
