- Darlington Raceway to honor Yarborough: With Cale Yarborough now having been inducted into the third class of the NASCAR’s Hall of Fame, Darlington Raceway will celebrate and honor his achievements during the upcoming Sprint Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500 race weekend on May 11-12. Darlington and the NASCAR Hall of Fame are partnering on a special ticket offer for fans, which will include an exclusive meet-and-greet and autograph session with the NASCAR legend and hometown hero from Timmonsville, S.C. For $59, each fan will receive a ticket in the Pearson grandstand for the Bojangles’ Southern 500, a ticket to the NASCAR Hall of Fame (redeemable throughout the season), a 2012 Hall of Fame Yearbook and the opportunity to get up-close-and-personal with Yarborough on race day. The package is a savings of $36 if individual tickets were purchased for each venue separately. - RCR to hold Pit Crew Training Combine: Richard Childress Racing announced it will hold the first Pit Crew Training Combine in its 43-year history on Tuesday, April 10 and Wednesday, April 11 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at the organization’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series facility located in Welcome, N.C.. The one-of-a-kind event, open to experienced pit crew members as well as athletes with a serious passion for developing into full-time pit crew team member, gives participants the opportunity to showcase their athletic talents and learn the necessary skills to help them develop into a well-rounded teammate. Activities will consist of a variety of rigorous agility workouts and physically demanding tests which include mock training programs and real-time simulated pits stops in high-pressure scenarios normally experienced on a weekly basis both on and off the track throughout the course of a full season. Entrants will have the ability to learn from some of the most experienced and respected leaders in the industry on what it takes to prepare your body and develop the necessary mindset for the highest level of motorsports competition. - Sad News – Thomas Kinkade: Artist Thomas Kinkade died Friday at age 54. Kinkade produced sentimental scenes of country gardens and pastoral landscapes in dewy morning light that were beloved by many but criticized by the art establishment. Kinkade died at his home in Los Gatos in the San Francisco Bay Area of what appeared to be natural causes, said family spokesman David Satterfield. There was no immediate word on an official cause of death. Calls to the coroner’s office were not immediately returned. The newspaper said friends and family on Friday began planning a private service and were weighing a public celebration for a later date (ABC). Kinkade painted a few prints dealing with NASCAR including “This is Talladega” and NASCAR Thunder.(4-7-2012)
- Jeb Burton picks up late-model win at Ace Speedway: As the nose of Speedy Faucette’s car crept closer on the climactic restart, Jeb Burton experienced something indicative of the tension-filled situation. I kind of shuddered,” he said. Burton, held on to claim victory Friday night in the first 75-lap Late Models feature of the season at Ace Speedway [Altamahaw, NC]. Burton, from Halifax, Va., made his NASCAR trucks series debut last weekend and finished 13th at Martinsville Speedway .He led the final 34 laps here Friday night and collected a winner’s trophy topped off with a stuffed animal — an Easter bunny.(Times-News.com)(4-7-2012)
