- ‘Overtime’ line at Bristol: Because Bristol is a short track, the NASCAR “overtime” line is in Turn 3.(ESPN)(4-17-2016)
- Kyle Busch trying to tie Stewart’s record at JGR:#18-Kyle Busch can match Tony Stewart’s record for most wins by a Joe Gibbs Racing driver. Before leaving in 2008 to form Stewart-Haas Racing and avoid driving a Toyota, Smoke made 356 starts for Gibbs in more than a decade of racing. He won 33 Cup races and two Cup championships. Busch sits on 32 wins [has 36 total, 4 with Hendrick Motorsports] after his back-to-back victory weekends. And he hit that total in 283 starts, two seasons fewer than Stewart. He is the reigning Cup champion, his first and the first for Toyota. Come Sunday, Busch will be in a good starting position. He goes off fifth, with three Gibbs cars ahead of him on the grid. And Saturday, Busch was fastest in early practice.(Sporting News)(4-17-2016)
- Peyton Manning to appear on race broadcast Sunday: NFL legend Peyton Manning will make an appearance in the FOX NASCAR broadcast booth on Sunday, April 17, during live FOX coverage of the NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES race from Bristol Motor Speedway. The two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, who retired at the conclusion of the 2015 NFL season, will join the FOX NASCAR broadcast team of Mike Joy, four-time champion Jeff Gordon and Hall of Famer/three-time champion Darrell Waltrip for a brief time. Manning is at Bristol this weekend as a guest of Dale Earnhardt Jr.(FOX)(4-17-2016)
- Kenseth says he has no plans to retire in near future: Although #20-Matt Kenseth hasn’t won this season and has just one top-10 finish, he’s exhibited as much speed as his teammates. His 164 laps led is third among the JGR drivers. Kenseth just doesn’t have the results to show for it. So why are pundits and fans questioning Kenseth’s future in the sport? “This is turning into a huge retirement topic right now for some odd reason–I’m not sure why and I’m getting a little bit of a complex about it,” Kenseth said sarcastically. With Jeff Gordon, 44, stepping out of the seat last year – and Kenseth turning the same age last month, comparisons are inevitable. The recent retirements of Peyton Manning, who will be an honorary race official and guest of Dale Earnhardt Jr. on Sunday, and Kobe Bryant certainly have fueled the topic. But perhaps the greatest reason the rumor won’t die is the long list of development drivers JGR has waiting in the wings – particularly Saturday’s Xfinity Series winner Erik Jones and points leader Daniel Suarez. Kenseth’s not going anywhere But Kenseth’s boss, Joe Gibbs, insists emphatically his senior driver’s future is secure. “Kenseth’s future is – we love him,” Gibbs says with a laugh. “I can tell you that right now. We love Matt Kenseth. He’s a big part of our program. We don’t need to announce anything. He’s solid.” Kenseth said retirement was the farthest thing from his mind. “I feel incredibly good, I’m driving I think arguably the best team in the sport, love the guys I’m working with and we’re still really competitive,” Kenseth said. “Our sport is just so different. I think you see a lot of people not go out on their own terms because they keep trying to do it for too long because they can still get a job and they can still maybe get in stuff that’s maybe not as good, but somebody is still going to hire them.”(in part from Motorsport)(4-17-2016)
- Autistic child’s name featured on #88 car: Through The Dale Jr. Foundation’s Driven to Give Gloves program, 8-year-old Aiden VanWagner will have his name featured above the passenger door of Dale Earnhardt’s #88 Nationwide Chevy this weekend. Aiden was diagnosed with autism at an early age but under the care of Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s (NCH) Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, Aiden has received individualized and comprehensive interventions and is enjoying school in a mainstream classroom. The Driven to Give Gloves program has been revamped for 2016 and focuses on four NCH Patient Champions. This month, Earnhardt is wearing gloves accented in blue, representing autism. Earnhardt’s race-worn gloves will be auctioned off to raise funds for NCH’s clinical and research programs. NCH is America’s largest pediatric hospital and research center with all care provided regardless of a family’s ability to pay. All four 2016 NCH Patient Champions will be attending the Kentucky Speedway race as special guests of Earnhardt and the #88 team.(HMS)(4-17-2016)
