- Penske Racing to appeal penalties: “Penske Racing received communication today from NASCAR regarding penalties they have issued against the #2 and #22 teams. - Statement by MWR regarding penalty: The following statement is in response to Wednesday’s penalty issued by NASCAR to Michael Waltrip Racing. “Michael Waltrip Racing is sensitive to working within the guidelines of NASCAR policy. This infraction clearly occurred as a result of a malfunction caused by race conditions. Therefore, we will not appeal. We thank NASCAR for providing a fair and equitable platform for all of its competitors and respect its decisions.”(MWR)(4-17-2013)
- NASCAR Penalties announced for three teams: Penalties have been handed down to three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams following last Saturday’s race at Texas Motor Speedway. The #56 car was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing); 12-4J (any determination by NASCAR officials that the race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules); and 20-12.8.1B (the car failed to meet the minimum front car heights during post-race inspection) of the 2013 rule book.
As a result of this violation, crew chief Chad Johnston has been fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until June 5. The team has also been docked six championship driver (Martin Truex Jr.) and six championship owner (Michael Waltrip) points.
The #2 and #22 cars have also been penalized. Both cars were found to be in violation of Sections 12-1; 12-4J and 20-12 (all suspension systems and components must be approved by NASCAR. Prior to being used in competition, all suspension systems and components must be submitted, in a completed form/assembly, to the office of the NASCAR Competition Administrator for consideration of approval and approved by NASCAR. Each such part may thereafter be used until NASCAR determines that such part is no longer eligible. All suspension fasteners and mounting hardware must be made of solid magnetic steel. All front end and rear end suspension mounts with mounting hardware assembled must have single round mounting holes that are the correct size for the fastener being used. All front end and rear end suspension mounts and mounting hardware must not allow movement or realignment of any suspension component beyond normal rotation or suspension travel.)
As a result of this violation and as it pertains to the #2 car the following penalties have been assessed:
· Crew chief Paul Wolfe has been fined $100,000 and suspended from NASCAR until the completion of the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship points events (including the non-points Sprint All-Star Race) and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
· Car chief Jerry Kelley, team engineer Brian Wilson and team manager Travis Geisler (serves as team manager for both the #2 and #22 cars) have been suspended from NASCAR until the completion of the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship points events (including the non-points Sprint All-Star Race) and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
· The loss of 25 championship driver (Brad Keselowski) and 25 championship owner (Roger Penske) points.
As it pertains to the #22 car the following penalties have been assessed:
· Crew chief Todd Gordon has been fined $100,000 and suspended from NASCAR until the completion of the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship points events (including the non-points Sprint All-Star Race) and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
· Car chief Raymond Fox and team engineer Samuel Stanley have been suspended from NASCAR until the completion of the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship points events (including the non-points Sprint All-Star Race) and placed on probation until Dec. 31.
· The loss of 25 championship driver (Joey Logano) and 25 championship owner (Walt Czarnecki) points.(NASCAR)(4-17-2013) - RCR Teams to Honor Memory of ECR Engines Co-Worker: Richard Childress Racing’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Camping World Truck Series teams will carry decals honoring the memory of an ECR Engines co-worker this week at Kansas Speedway. Joey Padgett, a valve train specialist at ECR Engines, passed away April 15 after suffering a heart attack. He was 57. Padgett had an extensive engine building career in NASCAR. He plied his craft with various companies including Ernie Elliott, Inc., Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, and Penske Racing before moving to ECR Engines in September 2012. He was also the owner/operator of Checkered Flag Fuels in Concord, N.C., where he was a lifelong resident. Memorials may be made to Cabarrus Pets Society, P.O. Box 5042, Concord, N.C. 28027. - Tire test at Daytona UPDATE: Goodyear will conduct a tire test at Daytona International Speedway on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 16 & 17. Drivers scheduled to participate include: #1-Jamie McMurray, #5-Kasey Kahne/Regan Smith (Hendrick Motorsports), #10-Danica Patrick, #16-Greg Biffle, #17-Ricky Stenhouse Jr., a driver from Joe Gibbs Racing, #21-Trevor Bayne, #33-Austin Dillon, and #99-Carl Edwards.(DIS)(4-10-2013)
UPDATE Testing continues at Daytona: Goodyear will continue a two-day NASCAR Sprint Cup Series tire test at Daytona International Speedway at 9:00am/et Wednesday as a prep for the July 6 Coke Zero 400. The test is open to the public. Goodyear began testing Tuesday, which was closed to the public and media and scheduled to end at 10:00pm/et. Spectators will be allowed into the Oldfield Grandstand on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Race fans may access the viewing area through the lobby of the Daytona International Speedway Ticket and Tours Building. There is no charge to watch testing.(Daytona Beach News Journal)(4-17-2013) - STP colors returns to #43; The King to be grand marshal: Aric Almirola and the #43 STP Ford team will be sporting classic Petty Blue and STP colors in the STP 400 Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway. Team owner Richard Petty, a long-time partner of STP, will be the Grand Marshall for the STP 400. He will give his drivers Almirola and Marcos Ambrose, as well as the rest of the Sprint Cup Series field, the command to start their engines on Sunday. Farmland Foods will present a cash and protein donation to Harvesters-The Community Food Network at the Kansas Speedway as part of an expanding effort by the company to raise awareness of hunger issues around the country. - Kansas Goodyear Tires Notes: While teams in both NASCAR series in action at Kansas this weekend will run the same Goodyear tire code on the right-side, they will run different left-side codes . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that Sprint Cup teams ran at Kansas after it was repaved for last October . . . it is also the same tire set-up that Cup teams ran at Michigan last August . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Kansas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire. - American Ethanol colors at Kansas for Burton: Jeff Burton’s #31 RCR Chevy team will sport the black and green colors of American Ethanol this weekend at Kansas Speedway. - Bowyer’s Autoplex opens Thursday: Thursday’s [April 18th] grand opening of the Clint Bowyer Autoplex in his hometown of Emporia, Kan. will be a special day for the #15 5-hour ENERGY Toyota driver in many ways. Bowyer walks into the Autoplex as the owner of the dealership where he worked as a paint-less dent repair specialist and detailer. He’ll be joined by three-time Sprint Cup champion Darrell Waltrip, Michael Waltrip Racing teammate Mark Martin, two-time Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip plus several hundred race fans for the celebration. - Hornaday penalized for Rockingham incident: NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Ron Hornaday Jr. has been penalized by NASCAR following his involvement in an on-track incident last Sunday at Rockingham Speedway. Hornaday Jr., driver of the #9 truck, was found to have violated Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing. Altercation with another competitor on the race track during a caution period) of the 2013 rule book. As a result of this violation, Hornaday Jr. has been fined $25,000, docked 25 championship driver points and placed on NASCAR probation until June 12.(NASCAR)(4-17-2013)
UPDATE: NTS Motorsports received notification of NASCAR’s penalties assessed for the incident involving Ron Hornaday Jr., occurring at Rockingham Speedway. - Kennedy to make Truck debut at Bristol in August: Ben Kennedy, who recently got his first win in the K&N Pro Series East tour on Saturday at 5 Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL, is scheduled to make his national touring series debut in a Turner Motorsports truck at Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 21 [in the Camping World Truck Series]. Kennedy is son of International Speedway Corporation president Lesa France and the late Bruce Kennedy and great grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. Kennedy is in his junior year at University of Florida where he’s studying sports management.(in part from FoxSports)
