  • Mayfield’s Dogs Attack Mail Carrier: When a mail carrier tried to deliver a package too big for Jeremy Mayfield’s mailbox, she tried to drop it off at the home’s front door, but when she went to the house, police say she was attacked by five dogs. The pit bull-lab mix dogs are currently in quarantine at the Catawba County Animal Shelter. Firefighters said it was at former NACSAR driver Jeremy Mayfield’s home where mail carrier Mary Bolton was attacked. Firefighters said she was hospitalized with bite marks and cuts all over her legs, arms and shoulders. Neighbors were stunned to hear news of the attack. Police have confirmed that Mayfield came outside to intervene, scooping up the badly injured carrier and taking her back inside the home. The police chief in Catawba said the dogs are being quarantined for ten days because he is not sure they are up to date on rabies shots. No decision has been made yet on what will happen to the dogs or if anyone will face charges.(WSOCtv.com)(4-23-2011)
  • UM enters the final lap in NASCAR: Though South Florida boasts the Homestead-Miami Speedway, few would argue the region qualifies as “NASCAR Country.” The flavor here isn’t down-home Southern, but instead tropical, not to mention international. One college convert at a time, a group of University of Miami students have spent this past semester trying to change that — sharpening their sports-marketing skills in the process. It’s all part of a national collegiate competition called NASCAR Kinetics: Marketing in Motion. The program functions in many ways like an internship, with students — many of them majoring in sports administration or similar fields — working through case studies and planning a promotional viewing party from start to finish as a way of developing big-league career skills. This semester marks the first time UM has been among the competing schools.
The winning five-member team will be announced Friday and will receive a VIP trip to an all-star race in Charlotte, N.C. Two other Florida schools are also in the hunt — the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida. The remaining schools run the gamut from campuses where NASCAR is hugely popular (Coastal Carolina University, for example) to not-so-popular (historically-black Howard University). The case-study portion of the competition focused on creating effective promotional campaigns for NASCAR sponsors such as Growth Energy — the “Official Corn-based Ethanol of NASCAR.”(more info and full article at the Miami Herald)(4-23-2011)
