  • #12 Crew Chiefs: Buddy Cisco and Steve Lane will be the co-crew chiefs for Jeremy Mayfield and the #12 Mobil One team during the suspension of Pete Sospenzo(from ESPN2 Qualifying)(5-6-2000)
  • New Marketing Firm: While not necessarily motorsports related Speedway Scene has learned that Brian France (senior VP marketing NASCAR), George Pyne (VP marketing NASCAR) and a “number of people from NASCAR” have recently formed a new marketing company. The company, called Brand Sense, is located in New York City and is being managed by Mark Johnson. Speaking on the new endeavor Brian France said , “It’s a licensing company that handles various licensing rights for customers. It’s not a motorsports company. An agency’s been formed to work with potential companies for their licensing rights. How to exploit them – manage them.” As France said, this is not a motorsports marketing company — “for the most part.” The names of some of the prospective clients Brand Sense is working to sign are head turners with France mentioning the name of Trump as a likely candidate, though France said, “We’re not announcing anything right now.”(Richmond Notes on Speedwayscene.com)(5-6-2000)
  • TV Stuff: Fox officials are reportingly talking with ABC’s Neil Goldberg, who does both ABC and ESPN telecasts of Cup and BGN events. And insiders say that Bill Weber, one of the sport’s top TV reporters, may be close to signing a deal with Fox(PitNow)(5-6-2000)
  • Sad News UPDATE: Christain Lovendahl, crew chief for the #19 Team Yellow BGN team, was killed in an automobile accident Friday afternoon while returning from Richmond. Lovendahl, nephew of NASCAR Cup/BGN driver Mark Martin, had flown back to Concord, N.C., after the David Ridling-owned #19 car and driver PJ Jones, failed to qualify for Friday night’s Hardee’s 250 at Richmond. He was driving a car, with three crewmen as passengers, when the accident occurred outside Mooresville, N.C. The other three men in the car were treated at a Mooresville hospital and were expected to be released tonight. Lovendahl, 27, was born in Batesville, Ark., also Martin’s hometown. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer. No information was available on further arrangements. According to later reports, the car Lovendahl was driving ran off the road and overturned. Lovendahl, who police say was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the car and died at the scened(SpeedVision)(5-6-2000)
  • Cope Released UPDATE driver for Gateway: Mike Cope was released Friday as the driver of the #86 Royal Crown Cola Dodge Truck. Impact Motorsports released Cope just prior to the team’s departure for the Ram Tough 200 to be held at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis. Most of Cope’s Royal Crown Cola crew quit as a result of the decision including Crew Chief Bryan Berry. Cope replaced Stacy Compton as the driver of the Impact Motorsports entry after Compton left for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. Berry replaced Kevin Cram as Crew Chief when Cram also left for Winston Cup competition. Also see another story on this at NASCAR Online: Cope released by Impact Motorsports.
