- Kahne and Truex Jr. qualifying times disallowed UPDATE: after qualifying for the Aaron’s 499 Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR announced that the times for #5-Kasey Kahne and #78-Martin Truex Jr. had been disallowed. Kahne’s car did not meet the minimum weight requirement and Truex Jr’s car did not meet minimum height requirement that is used for restrictor-plate tracks. Kahne will start 41st and Truex Jr will start 42nd. #5 crew chief Kenny Francis and Truex Jr. offered these quotes about the situation:
Kenny Francis, Crew chief of the #5 Farmer Insurance / Thankamillionteachers.com Chevy on the #5 teams time getting disallowed: “Basically we had a malfunction with a ballast container. The cap that holds the ballast in came out. It could be mechanical or human error we are not really sure what happened. At the end of the day 25 pounds of ballast came out and we were 25 pounds light at the scales. The time was disallowed and we will have to start at the back.”
Martin Truex Jr., #78 Furniture Row Chevy – time was disallowed after failing post qualifying inspection: “After positing the fastest practice speed yesterday, today’s result and infraction were disappointing to say the least. That’s the bad news. The good news is that we have a fast car for tomorrow’s race, and as we have said many times, qualifying really doesn’t mean that much here.”(Team Chevy)(5-4-2014)
UPDATE: Kenny Francis, the crew chief for the #5 team that competes in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, has been penalized for rules violations committed during qualifying May 3 at Talladega Superspeedway. The infraction is a P3 level penalty and violates Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 12-4.3(A)1-c (unapproved added weight and/or weight affixed improperly) of the 2014 rule book. As a result, Francis has been fined $25,000. The infraction was discovered in post-qualifying inspection.(NASCAR)(5-6-2014) - RFR, Stenhouse Jr. Building for America’s Bravest at Shootout: Roush Fenway Racing and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. announced they are teaming with the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to support the organizations’ continued effort to build ‘smart’ homes for injured military heroes. In addition, the organizations’ ‘9/11 Never Forget’ mobile exhibit will make its return to its North Carolina roots at RFR’s Fan Appreciation Day on May 22. The exhibit was built in North Carolina and was unveiled in Fayetteville in September 2013.
“It’s a great cause and I am proud to carry their colors on our race car,” said two-time NASCAR champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. “It’s our duty as American Citizens to give back to the guys that give everything for our freedom and are true heroes. They are the ones that allow us to be able to chase our dreams each week – on and off the race track – and I am very excited to be able to help raise awareness for the work that these great organizations are doing to give back to them.”
Stenhouse’s #17 Sprint Cup Ford Fusion will run a special paint scheme in the Sprint Cup Showdown. The partnership will help raise awareness to build a smart home for Tom McRae, a Marine Gunnery Sgt. who served three tours of duty in Iraq before suffering life altering injuries while on his second deployment in Afghanistan.
“We are honored that the Roush Fenway Racing team, and their driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr., are supporting our efforts to build ‘smart’ homes for our catastrophically injured military heroes,” said Frank Siller, chairman of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. “By featuring our ‘Building for America’s Bravest’ and ‘Tunnel to Towers’ logos on the paint scheme of Ricky’s #17 Ford Fusion, they are helping to raise awareness for the work we’re doing. Then, the fact that Lionel Racing will be making die-cast cars of the model, and donating a portion of the proceeds to us, makes it even more fantastic.”
“Having Ricky Stenhouse Jr. drive his racecar in the All-Star Race with the ‘Building for America’s Bravest’ logo is really cool,” said McRae. “I can’t thank him and the Roush Fenway Racing team enough. And to know that Lionel Racing is going to take Ricky’s car and make die-cast models of it, and that part of the money raised from sales will go to building smart homes for military like me who’ve been badly injured, makes it really awesome.”
The ‘9/11 Never Forget’ mobile display is a traveling monument that honors those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. It will be on hand at Roush Fenway for its annual fan day on May 22, marking its first appearance at the team’s headquarters. The partnership marks the fourth season that RFR has teamed with the Stephen Siller Tunnel of Towers Foundation to raise awareness.(RFR / Lionel Racing), see an image of the scheme on the #17 Team Schemes page.(5-6-2014) - Overnight Talladega TV Ratings UPDATE: not much info but the Aaron’s 499 Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway had a overnight rating of 4.0, which is down on the 2013 overnight rating of 4.4(ShowBuzzDaily). No 2014 viewership numbers were posted. 2013’s final TV Rating was a 4.6 with 7.345 million viewers and in 2012 the rating was 5.1 with 8.348 million viewers.
See past races for 2014 and a five-year comparison chart on the 2014 NASCAR TV Ratings page.(5-5-2014)
UPDATE: A weak season for NASCAR on FOX continued with the lowest overnight from Talladega in at least sixteen years. Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Aaron’s 499 from Talladega earned a 4.0 overnight rating on FOX, down 9% from last year (4.4), down 15% from 2012 (4.7), and the lowest overnight for the spring Talladega race since at least 1998. The previous low was set last year. The multi-year low comes on the heels of the two lowest overnights in NASCAR on FOX history – Darlington’s 3.2 and Richmond’s 3.0. So far this season, FOX has earned its lowest overnights ever at Daytona, Phoenix, Martinsville, Las Vegas, Darlington, Richmond and Talladega, and its second-lowest overnight at Fontana. Despite the lower numbers, Sunday’s race earned the fourth-highest overnight of the weekend for a sporting event on broadcast or cable, trailing only three NBA Game 7s – Grizzlies/Thunder on TNT (4.1), Warriors/Clippers on TNT (4.3), and Mavericks/Spurs on ABC (4.9). Because final ratings for NASCAR tend to rise from the overnights, it is entirely possible that the race will end up having been the top sporting event of the week when the final numbers are released.(Sports Media Watch)(5-6-2014) - Hungry Jack joins JTG Daugherty for 2 races: JTG Daugherty Racing has some of the finest quality brands activating in the Sprint Cup Series with the #47 Chevy SS team and announce the addition of Hungry Jack pancake mixes and breakfast syrups, which are part of The J.M. - NASCAR Numbers Heading to Kansas:
4: The number of finishes outside the top 20 for Jimmie Johnson in the first 10 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. That’s the most since 2009, when Johnson also had four results outside the top 20 in the first 10 races. But, oh, by the way, Johnson went on to win the series championship that year.
5: The number of former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champions involved in “The Big One” in Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 at Talladega. On Lap 137, 2012 champion Brad Keselowski triggered a wreck that also collected Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth, who have 14 titles between them.
11: The finishing position at Talladega of Landon Cassill, who kept the #40 Hillman Racing Chevrolet in the top 10 for much of Sunday afternoon. That result was a career best for Cassill in 201 Sprint Cup starts, bettering a pair of 12th-place finishes at Michigan and Daytona.
23.3: Kyle Busch’s average finish in 13 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at Kansas Speedway, statistically Busch’s worst track. The driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota has but two top 10s at Kansas, and no top fives. He has led 85 laps there, his lowest total by far at a 1.5-mile intermediate speedway.
5: The number of drivers who have won two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway, suggesting that success breeds success at the 1.5-mile track. In 16 total races at Kansas, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth have won twice each. Kenseth is the only one of the five to win in two different car makes a Ford and a Toyota.(NASCAR Wire Service)(5-6-2014) - Top 10 Driver Ratings at Kansas:

If Ambrose does make it to All-Star night, he will pay forward the $25,000 fine he received after the event at Richmond International Raceway to Victory Junction. Ambrose and the team have committed to pay the fine forward from potential All-Star Race winnings and donate it to the camp founded by Kyle and Pattie Petty in honor of their son, Adam. Victory Junction enriches the lives of children with serious illnesses by providing life-changing camping experiences that are exciting, fun and empowering, at no cost to children or their families.
Ambrose first entertained the idea after so many of his fans here in the United States and his native Australia wanted to aid monetarily with his fine. The 2013 All-Star has now found a unique way for fans to not only support him, but to help children experience life-changing moments at Victory Junction and assist the camp helped built by his boss, “The King” Richard Petty.
“I had a tremendous outpouring of support after Richmond from so many fans,” said Ambrose. “But, that situation was between myself and another driver. I had to pay the consequences from that and my fans had nothing to do with what happened. But, they have been so supportive of me in NASCAR, that maybe there was something we could do so they could make a difference. If they want to support me, they can vote for me and we’ll take the total of the fine and pay it forward to Victory Junction. I’ve been to Victory Junction a few times. It’s a place like no other and really can take your breath away when you see the kids having so much fun. I’m a father and this is a place that really hits home. So, this is an opportunity to take an unfortunate situation and we can all come together to make a difference. The fans can just vote for me for the All-Star race and I’ll try to race in. We’ll do this together and hopefully do something special.” Ambrose will have three opportunities to be eligible for the Sprint All-Star Race. He can win this weekend at Kansas Speedway, finish first or second in the Sprint Showdown before the Sprint All-Star Race and finally fans can vote him in. Fans have three different methods to vote for Ambrose leading into the All-Star Race, including using the NASCAR Mobile application on their mobile device. Votes from a mobile handset count double. Fans can also go online to NASCAR.com/SprintFanVote and also visit the Sprint Experience at the track and vote. Voting will end on May 16.(RPM)(5-6-2014) - GM Starts Work on New Performance and Racing Center: Last week General Motors began construction of a state-of-the-art facility for race engine design and development, as well as an electric motor laboratory and gear center. GM’s continued investment in motorsports comes from the time-tested belief that racing is the ultimate proving ground for much of the technology that applies to the vehicles GM sells. Engineers and technicians from GM’s race engineering center in Wixom, Mich. will move to the new facility in mid-2015. The relocation will centralize North American powertrain engineering expertise for production engines as well as advanced and racing propulsion programs. Condensing the engineering to one large space is an excellent way to develop race-bred engineers whether they work on production or performance vehicles. The move will include about 100 employees who work on powertrain racing development, electric motors and in the gear center. The new building is expected to be opened and in use by mid-2015 and completed by early 2016. The GMPRC is part of a $200 million investment GM announced last January to build a new 138,000 sq.-ft. test wing. At that time, the company announced work at four remote locations would consolidate on the Pontiac campus, helping to reduce development timing for GM’s next-generation advanced propulsion technologies. When the moves are complete, about 400 jobs will be added to the Pontiac campus. Engineers at the GMPRC will work on powertrain-related projects for GM’s involvement in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Verizon IndyCar Series, TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Pirelli World Challenge, NHRA (COPO Camaro Program) and Global Rally Cross.(in part from a GM PR)(5-6-2014)
- Tagliani to drive 2 races for Penske: Accomplished road racer Alex Tagliani will drive the #22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang for Team Penske in two 2014 NASCAR Nationwide Series road course races. Tagliani will compete for the team in the June 21 event at Road America and again on August 16 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The No. 22 Discount Tire Ford won at both Road America and Mid-Ohio last season with AJ Allmendinger behind the wheel. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Tagliani has made four NNS starts over the course of his racing career, which has included memorable performances in IndyCar, CART, Sports Cars, V8 Supercars and several other forms of motorsports. He made two NNS starts in 2009, and competed in one series race in both 2011 and 2012. In 2011, Tagliani drove the #12 car for Team Penske in his home race at Montreal, where he started second and finished second after leading 11 laps. Tagliani is also a former Indianapolis 500 pole winner, as he captured the prestigious pole position in 2011. He is a former winner at Road America as he took the checkered flag in the 2004 CART Series race at the legendary road course. Tagliani has also won in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series in his career. - Hattori Racing to focus on Nationwide Series: Hattori Racing Enterprises’ owner, Shigeaki Hattori, announced that the team will be scaling back in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and running more NASCAR Nationwide Series races. “We started our Nationwide Series program this year with intentions to run only a few Nationwide Series races and to have two cars full time in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. At this point in the season, however, we have decided that we need to focus more on our Nationwide Series program,” explains Shigeaki. “There are several factors that have influenced this choice, and we have received a lot of support from our sponsors encouraging this decision. We are still a small team, and I believe we need to run more Nationwide Series races to gain more experience so that we can be even stronger next season.” Hattori’s first attempt at the Nationwide Series far surpassed expectations. The HRE #80 Goodyear Toyota, driven by Johnny Sauter, surprised many by qualifying 9th for season opener at Daytona International Speedway, and then ran well for the majority of the race. HRE is sponsored by a number of Japanese companies, many of whom were impressed with HRE’s first Nationwide Series start enough to provide support for future races. Several companies have decided to shift their sponsorship from the HRE’s K&N Series cars to the Nationwide Series car. HRE will continue to enter the #1 Big Machine Records Toyota in select NKNPSE races with David Garbo Jr. behind the wheel. The next Nationwide Series race for HRE will be the History 300, May 24th at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Johnny Sauter will once again be piloting the #80 for the Charlotte race. HRE will announce future schedules as the season progresses.(Hattori Racing Enterprises)(5-6-2014)
- Blaney set for busy Kansas week: Hopefully, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers enjoyed the break – because things are about to get a lot busier for the series. And few will be as busy as Ryan Blaney. After racing only twice so far this season, the 2014 schedule will get hectic over the next couple of weeks. For the first time this season, the series will be in action in back-to-back weekends with the SFP 250 this Friday night at Kansas Speedway and next week at Charlotte Motor Speedway. For Blaney, it will be a full weekend in Kansas as the 20-year-old driver will race in both Friday night’s SFP 250 and Saturday night’s 5-hour ENERGY 400. It would be the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut for Blaney, who will drive the No. 12 Ford for Team Penske on Saturday. The race also could provide an opportunity for Blaney to compete against his father Dave, which would make them the first father/son duo to compete in in the same NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event since Bobby Hamilton Sr. and Jr. raced at Atlanta on October 30, 2005. Both Blaneys raced against one another last season in the historic truck race at Eldora Speedway.(NASCAR)(5-6-2014)

Sid Mauldin, owner of SWM and partner in SWM-NEMCO Motorsports is currently receiving treatment at MD Anderson, located in Houston, TX and wanted to share his experience with the NASCAR community while showing support for the facility that has provided such impeccable care. Nemechek, who is sharing the NCWTS season with his 16 year-old son, John Hunter, had what he considers one of his most memorable racing moments at the 1.5-mile tri-oval. In October 2004, Nemechek swept the weekend, winning both the NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.(SWM-NEMCO)(5-6-2014)

His last start in the NCWTS came at Iowa in 2012 where he was the victim of another driver’s misfortune. When he’s not at the track, Shafer is busy with his business; Thunder Exhaust which manufacturers low-profile NASCAR style exhaust tips for most any vehicle. He spends some of his time away from the shop with his eight-year old son Jonathan who is currently racing quarter-midgets around their native Ohio home. In June of 2001 Shafer was seriously injured in a wreck at Michigan International Raceway while competing in the ARCA Series.
