  • Darlington overnight TV Ratings: NASCAR on Fox posted a 3.5/7 Saturday night in primetime for racing from DARLINGTON. Saturday’s 3.5/7 is down -10% compared to last year’s 3.9/8 for the same race. Competition from the NBA was clearly a factor in the skid, as ABC’s Saturday night NBA game was up +32% over last year. For the season-to-date NASCAR’s 4.6/10 average in the metered markets is now flat with last year, although there continues to be a divide between the average ratings comparison and the gross ratings points comparison. Last year’s average excludes two rainouts, which actually helps the average. On a total ratings points basis NASCAR is up +25% over last year in the overnights (45.9 vs. 36.8 ). See race-to-race and four year comparison on the 2011 TV Ratings page.(5-9-2011)

  • NASCAR will look into driver altercations: NASCAR will address altercations that occurred between Ryan Newman and Juan Pablo Montoya in the sanctioning body’s hauler and the dustup on and off the track between Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch. “We’ll look at both of those,” Kerry Tharp, NASCAR’s senior director of communications, said Sunday morning. Montoya requested a meeting with NASCAR after his feud with Newman was reignited at Richmond International Raceway last weekend. Newman and officials from Stewart Haas Racing elected to meet with NASCAR immediately after the Richmond race. When the drivers gathered in the hauler on Friday morning, a punch was thrown by Newman, according to sources. Harvick vs. Busch came to a crescendo last November at Homestead Miami Speedway when the driver of the #29 complained that Busch was racing him too hard and Harvick then dumped Busch’s #18 Toyota, which erupted into flames. The rivalry was rekindled Saturday night at Darlington Raceway on the second-to-last restart on Lap 363 as the drivers jockeyed for position among the top 10 on the lead lap. After the race, Harvick chased Busch onto the entrance of pit road, where the #29 crew waited to defend their driver. Harvick climbed from the car and approached Busch’s vehicle. Harvick attempted to throw a haymaker, but Busch hit the gas and plowed the #29 into the wall. Both drivers were called to the NASCAR hauler after the incident. The last time a NASCAR driver intentionally hit another car on pit road was Steven Wallace at Memphis Motorsports Park in October 2009. Wallace was fined $5,000 and placed on probation.(Fox Sports)(5-9-2011)
  • NASCAR Hall of Fame Celebrates First Birthday: On Wednesday, May 11, 2011, the NASCAR Hall of Fame in uptown Charlotte, N.C., will celebrate its first birthday. A year ago, the venue captured national attention during its grand opening. This year’s celebration will focus on the local and regional community. Highlights include a visit from Metro School students, special one-day admission price of $5.11 and donations to the Red Cross for tornado victims. “It is appropriate that we take a moment to show our appreciation for the community that has embraced us,” said Winston Kelley, executive director of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. “We have had challenges in this economy, the same challenges that many start-up businesses have. However, we also have many stories that should make Charlotteans and the NASCAR community very proud.” As a special treat, various executives and board members will serve birthday cake to students from neighboring Metro School shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11 in the Great Hall. In addition, all customers that day will be treated to a discounted admission of $5.11 in honor of the landmark date, and $1 from every admission will go directly to the Red Cross to fund tornado relief efforts. In its first 12 months, the NASCAR Hall of Fame entertained more than 270,000 customers making it the second-most visited sports hall of fame in North America. In 2010, the National Baseball Hall of Fame led the way with 281,000 visitors, while the Pro Football Hall of Fame had 191,943 visitors.
