  • Biffle unsure of 2015 plans? UPDATE: #16-Greg Biffle told Motorsport.com last month at Darlington that it was his “intent” to stay at Roush Fenway Racing and he had “a feeling (he was) getting closer” to inking a new deal. However, following his conversation Wednesday night with Claire B. Lang on Sirius/XM NASCAR Radio, Biffle’s plans didn’t sound so concrete. “I think there’s plenty of opportunities in the industry to be in competitive cars,” Biffle said. “I enjoy being at Roush Fenway. I love 3M. We have a great relationship and the program works really, really well for 3M … Plain and simply, I’ve got options. I know I’m going to be racing. I know I’m going to be driving a car. So I’m not worried about it.”(Motorsport)(5-9-2014)
UPDATE: Greg Biffle has no desire to leave Roush Fenway Racing when his contract expires at season’s end. “No, not a bit,” Biffle said Friday at Kansas Speedway when asked if he was looking outside of the Roush organization. “Absolutely, 100 percent ‘No.’ “Biffle said earlier this week on SIRIUS/XM NASCAR Radio’s “Dialed In” that negotiations are continuing with current sponsor 3M to extend the company’s deal to back Biffle’s #16 Ford. While nothing is imminent in terms of finalizing a new contract, Biffle says talks are continuing in the right direction. “We have a great relationship. They’re very happy with the program,” said Biffle. “There is a bunch of new people trying to get their arms around all of the business. They’ve got a lot of business units inside that ‘3M’ … which likes having all these sponsors in the garage part of one company. This is a big deal for them.”(Motor Racing Network)(5-9-2014)
  • Bowyer’s mother to wave green flag: #15-Clint Bowyer has one more reason to follow his mother’s instructions: She’ll wave the green flag at Kansas Speedway. It’s a NASCAR-style Mother’s Day celebration when Jana Bowyer waves the flag to start Saturday night’s Sprint Cup race. Clint Bowyer grew up in Emporia, Kansas, and was honored to have his mom picked to help start the 400-mile race. “We are a pretty close family so we’ve been ragging on her a little bit,” Bowyer said. “`Don’t drop the flag mom, whatever you do, don’t drop the flag.’ It’s pretty cool. I hope there’s not a caution.”(Associated Press)(5-9-2014)

  • Richard Petty Motorsports considering move to Toyota? Was that the King meeting with representatives from [Toyota] at Richmond? According to multiple sources, Richard Petty Motorsports [#9-Ambrose & #43-Almirola] is contemplating leaving Ford when its contract expires at the end of this year. One sticking point, however, could be engines. TRD currently has the capability to provide eight teams with engines. Although there are only three teams from Joe Gibbs Racing and three from Michael Waltrip Racing exercising that option, who’s to say that either of those operations isn’t considering expansion in the future. Without TRD engines, a partnership with Toyota isn’t nearly as attractive. After having your cars powered by Roush Yates engines, Triad would certainly be a step down.(Motorsport)(5-9-2014)
  • National Guard NASCAR sponsorship examined by Congress UPDATE: The National Guard spent $26.5 million to sponsor NASCAR racing in 2012 to bolster its marketing and recruitment but failed to sign up a single new soldier to its ranks, according to data provided to USA Today. Even though the Guard spent $88 million as a NASCAR sponsor from 2011 to 2013, it is unclear how many new recruits, if any, signed up because of it, according to documents. The Guard on Wednesday would not confirm the figures on prospects and recruits developed through its NASCAR sponsorship. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., who will hold a hearing on the recruitment program Thursday, assailed the Guard for “wasting a bunch of money on a very expensive sports sponsorship.” The Guard received 24,800 recruiting prospects from the program in 2012, documents show. In those cases, potential recruits indicated the NASCAR affiliation prompted them to seek more information about joining. Of that group, only 20 met the Guard’s qualifications for entry into the service, and not one of them joined. In 2013, the number of prospects associated with NASCAR dropped to 7,500, according to briefing materials for the Senate subcommittee on Financial and Contracting Oversight led by McCaskill. The National Guard needs 1 million leads to meet its annual recruiting goal of 50,000 soldiers. The NASCAR initiative, along with the $38 million spent on an IndyCar racing sponsorship, over the same period, will be the target of the hearing led by McCaskill. Rick Breitenfeldt, a National Guard spokesman, said 90% of Army National Guard soldiers who enlisted or re-enlisted from 2007 to 2013 indicated that they had been exposed to information about the service through NASCAR-related recruiting and retention materials. Sponsoring NASCAR and driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. puts the Guard’s name in front of 77 million fans, he said.(USA Today)(5-7-2014)
UPDATE: Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., questioned the Army National Guard’s sponsorship in NASCAR and IndyCar during a subcommittee hearing Thursday afternoon, and the official overseeing those programs said he planned to evaluate them. The National Guard will sponsor Dale Earnhardt Jr. for 20 Sprint Cup races this season. Military contacts are done on a yearly basis. Sen. McCaskill said that the National Guard’s budget for NASCAR amounts to $32 million from a sports marketing budget of more than $56 million. The National Guard does not differentiate between what goes to the team and what goes toward activation. No decision has been set by the National Guard for next season. “I will be … reviewing all these programs in the next, probably, month,” Maj. Gen. Judd Lyons, acting director, Army National Guard, said during the hearing.
At one point during the hour-long hearing Sen. McCaskill said: “I don’t understand … how you can justify the fact that nobody is getting recruited from the NASCAR. The facts speak for themselves. the data is very clear. You’re not getting recruits off NASCAR. This is data you gave us. The reason we know is this because you told us.”
Said Maj. Gen. Lyons: “I’m trying to analyze these programs for exactly the reasons that you’re saying. Are they achieving the intended affect? Are they the best use of our our taxpayer dollars? Is that the right thing to be doing? These are things I’m considering as the acting director as a path forward.”(Motor Racing Network)(5-9-2014)

  • Sad News – Wilbur Rakestraw: In the early years of stock car racing, Wilbur Rakestraw of Paulding County (GA) was one of the stars of Atlanta-area tracks such as Lakewood Speedway and the Dallas Speed Bowl. He also was well-known on the NASCAR circuit now known as Sprint Cup and on NASCAR’s old Convertible Series. Rakestraw, who died Wednesday at age 85 of congestive heart failure, was among the drivers who made the transition from the old beach course at Daytona to the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway. He ran the first three Daytona 500s as well as the first race at the track now known at Atlanta Motor Speedway, finishing 11th. Rakestraw ran 30 points-paying races in the Cup Series and 11 in Convertibles. • Kansas Speedway, Kansas Lottery renew partnership: Kansas Speedway and Kansas Lottery officials announced a multi-year renewal of their partnership, which has been in place since Kansas Speedway opened in 2001. The partnership means the Kansas Lottery will remain the entitlement sponsor of the NASCAR Nationwide Series race (Kansas Lottery 300), which returns to Kansas Speedway on Oct. 4, and the Kansas Lottery will continue as the “Official Lottery of Kansas Speedway.” “I’m excited that we are able to continue our partnership with the Kansas Lottery,” said Kansas Speedway President Patrick Warren. “The Lottery has been a tremendous supporter of ours and their continued sponsorship of Kansas Speedway and as the entitlement partner on our NASCAR Nationwide Series race is incredible. It’s going to be a great year at Kansas Speedway and I’m glad that the Kansas Lottery will be a part of it.”(Kansas Speedway)(5-9-2014)
  • Darlington expects to keep race in April: Darlington Raceway President Chip Wile likes where his old, country track stands in NASCAR, even if it’s no longer the sports’ backdrop for honoring mothers this week. The 65-year-old facility had spent the previous nine years building the formerly off weekend of Mother’s Day into a can’t-miss race for NASCAR moms, who walked across the stage with their sons or daughters during driver introductions and combined for the combined for the unique call of “Drivers and sons, start your engines!” But Wile believes that the switch in is Darlington’s best interest long term and will keep NASCAR’s oldest superspeedway relevant with a new generation of race fans. Wile said he’s heard little except raves from NASCAR leaders and officials at Darlington’s parent company, International Speedway Corp. After a few weeks to review numbers and catch their breaths, Wile says track leaders have started plans to make things even better in 2015. He’s confident the April race weekend will stick and give fans something to count on each season. The track had sold out its first four Mother’s Day weekend races, but attendance had fallen off in recent years. Wile said the track came close to a full house a month ago, although he would not provide details about attendance, citing track policy.(Associated Press)(5-9-2014)
