I think it would be really cool,” he said after sitting in a Sprint Cup car on the day he was announced as a Haas F1 driver. “It’s definitely on our wish list,” Joe Custer, chief operating officer of Haas F1 said. “We just have to make it work – whether it be this year, next year, whenever that is. We’re not sure. He’s made it clear that he wouldn’t want his debut to be on an oval – where he’s never done it before. There’s so much going on. We have to figure out the testing opportunities and all the things that would make it a success.” Either road course race on the Sprint Cup schedule would be ideal for the 30-year-old racer with Sonoma (June 26) and Watkins Glen (August 7) both during off weeks for F1. But while Sonoma falls at the end of the Canada/Baku back-to-back run, the Glen race falls in the middle of the F1’s summer break between the German GP (July 31) and the Belgian GP on August 28. “I’m not sure when it would happen, but it’s on our list,” explained Custer. “We would like to have him test. He would be a rookie. I don’t think there are any barriers to any of this. We just have to figure it out and get it on the schedule. Then, five cars or four cars? Or does he work with another team in the garage. All of that. We have to work out the details and have enough time to make it happen.”(Motorsport)(5-9-2016)
- Stewart making up ground on 30th in points: #14-Tony Stewart, who missed the first eight races of the year after he suffered a burst fracture of the L1 vertebrae in an off-road accident Jan. 31, posted a solid 12th-place finish in Saturday’s night’s Go Bowling 400 at Kansas Speedway. That was the three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion’s best finish behind the wheel since a 10th-place run at Martinsville Speedway last fall. Ty Dillon took over for Stewart last week at Talladega Superspeedway and finished sixth in the #14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet. Stewart started that race and so was credited with the finish, but at Kansas, Stewart earned the 12th-place result without relief help. And it was a good points night, too. When Stewart resumed driving at Richmond three weeks ago, he was 112 points out of 30th place in the driver standings. Now, just three races later, Stewart has trimmed that margin by more than half, so it’s down to a mere 59 points. To qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in this, his final season as a driver, Stewart will have to end NASCAR’s 26-race regular season in the top 30 in points and will in all likelihood have to win a race. After Kansas, Stewart has 15 races left to accomplish those goals.(Fox Sports)(5-9-2016)
- Johnson entered in “Assault on Mt. Mitchell” bike ride: Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson will be riding in the 2016 Assault on Mount Mitchell on Monday, May 16, according to the Freewheelers Cycling Association, a Spartanburg-based club that hosts the epic bike ride each year. Johnson has a deep-rooted appreciation for the cycling world, and enjoys participating in century rides and triathlons. Johnson, who has always placed a high priority on fitness, according to the Freewheelers, began competing in triathlons in 2012, fitting training and events into his busy NASCAR schedule. He often approaches an athletic competition in the same manner he would a NASCAR race – utilizing similar strategies to tackle both. He must have enjoyed his taste of cycling in the mountains. In March, Johnson took part in the elite PeopleForBikes team that bikee roughly 400 miles from Asheville, North Carolina, to Atlanta, Georgia, March 30-April 2. The group will made stops in Charlotte, Greenville, South Carolina, and Athens, Georgia before arriving in Atlanta to bring awareness to cycling safety. Johnson only rode the 130-mile leg from Asheville to Charlotte. The Freewheelers Cycling Association is thrilled to have Johnson ride in his first Assaults experience. He joins his friend George Hincapie, of Spartanburg, who competed in 12 Tours de France, for this year’s ride to the top of Mount Mitchell. “The Assaults” is one of the most intense, premier cycling experiences in the region. It draws a full field of nearly 1,000 cyclists from across the world each year. The Assault on Mount Mitchell is a 102.7-mile self-paced ride, (not a race), from downtown Spartanburg, along the Blue Ridge Parkway, to the summit at Mount Mitchell State Park – at 6,684 feet the highest peak in the Eastern United States – in North Carolina for a total vertical ascent of more than 10,000 feet.(Asheville Citizen-Times)(5-9-2016)

See the complete list on the Dover entry list page. - Kligerman, Anderson uncertain of running Charlotte: This past week, the lightning bolt struck Ricky Benton Racing Enterprises. After finishes of third, eighth and eighth to open the season, Parker Kligerman had high hopes for his run at Kansas. Despite not showing much speed during the practice sessions, the team focused on handling for its #92 Ford, a move that served them well when most other teams struggled in the early stages of the race. There was only problem with Kligerman’s promising performance: he didn’t get to finish it. A mid-race wreck while climbing through the field left the veteran angered by the level of aggressiveness displayed on track; it also left him with a bunch of mangled sheet metal in place of a truck he needed to stay in one piece in order to keep competing full-time in the series. “We really needed this truck for Charlotte, so I’m putting Charlotte in doubt at this time,” Kligerman said as his team thrashed to get the remains of the truck into the hauler. “I don’t know if we’ll make it.” Jordan Anderson and his Bolen Motorsports team are in a similar situation to Kligerman’s. While the team has a few more people at the shop than RBR does, the hits are just as hard for the Bolen organization, a new team which failed to qualify for Atlanta and Martinsville.A multitude of wrecks during the race allowed Anderson and the #66 truck to climb into the top 10 and race with the leaders until contact sent him hard into the wall. The damage to the truck turned out to be more than could be repaired as he returned to the garage just a handful of laps later after a second hit, which was even harder.”This was our only intermediate truck we’ve got,” Anderson said after something in his steering broke, causing terminal damage to the No. 66 Chevrolet. “So hopefully between now and Charlotte in two weeks, we’ll find a truck to run.”(Frontstretch)(5-9-2016)
