Nevertheless, contact between their two cars bent the sheet metal on both vehicles, Hamlin’s on the right front and Patrick’s on the left rear. Patrick, on new tires, was struggling with the handling of her #10 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevy and had difficulty holding the bottom. She had just let Clint Bowyer’s #15 Chevy pass her to the inside, and as she approached Turn 1, Hamlin was closing fast behind her. Patrick entered the turn low but didn’t hold the bottom, and as she drifted up off the bottom lane, Hamlin opted to try an inside pass but ran out of room. The resulting collision, though not a violent impact, was enough to do cosmetic damage to both cars. “I had just come out on tires,” Patrick said. “They were cold and I wasn’t very good anyway – I was pretty loose. I came down the front straightaway and I put my finger out the window to point him by, but he hit me on entry. I don’t know if he… it looked like he came pretty close when he went to go to the inside, too. Man, I love Denny, but he makes a lot of mistakes behind me. I don’t know if he misjudged it, or I was going slower than he thought, but I put my finger out the window and pointed him by. I had no intention to race him. I was not fast enough. I don’t know, but the guys are going to try and fix it.”
From his vantage point, Hamlin couldn’t see Patrick’s signal. “I was on the outside of her on the straightaway, so I couldn’t see the left side of her car,” Hamlin said. “I went to go low, but I don’t know if she had stuff on her tires. It looked like she was struggling and had stuff on her tires for a few laps there. I tried to go low and obviously we hung bumpers.” Patrick’s troubles weren’t over. In Saturday’s final practice prior to Sunday’s Food City 500, she was still fighting a loose handling condition and brushed the wall near the apex of Turns 3 and 4 approximately five minutes into Happy Hour. After repairs, Hamlin’s #11 Toyota, on the other hand, was fast enough to top the speed chart during final Cup practice with a lap at 126.129 mph.(NASCAR Wire Service)(4-16-2016) - Saturday first practice for the Food City 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway is over, after 55 scheduled minutes, the top five, slowest and notes:

Pole sitter #19-Edwards chose pit stall 1 [as do most pole sitters].
2nd place qualifier #20-Kenseth took pit stall 23, the first pit stall on the rear pit road.
#22-Logano, who starts 3rd took the 6th pit stall.
The 42nd and final pit stall was taken by #48-Johnson, who starts 7th.
To see where the drivers/teams pit stall is, see the pit selection chart on Jayski.com’s Pit Stall Selection chart.(4-16-2016) - Bristol Pit Rules: Bristol Motor Speedway operates under a plan where one-pit road will be used during pit stops under caution. Currently, Bristol remains the only track in the Sprint Cup Series that utilizes two pit roads with 20 pit stalls on the front stretch and 20 on the backstretch (three stalls are not used). Teams that pit on the backstretch used to be at a competitive disadvantage. Since the spring 2002 race at Bristol, teams will enter pit road in Turn 2 (the current backstretch pit entrance) drive around down the backstretch and around Turns 3 and 4 and exit in Turn 1. Under green-flag conditions teams will enter and exit pit road under the current two-pit-road scheme.
- Texas TV Ratings UPDATE2: FOX’s coverage of NASCAR’s Duck Commander 500 led a typically quiet Saturday. In primetime the race scored a 0.9 rating / 3 share (4.22 million viewers) in adults 18-49, pending updates, tying with CBS’ “48 Hours” for the top rating of the night.(TV by the Numbers)(4-11-2016)
UPDATE: NASCAR Sprint Cup racing from Texas earned a 2.5 overnight rating on FOX Saturday night, down 14% from last year (2.9) and the lowest overnight ever for a Sprint Cup race on FOX. The 2.5 is also the lowest ever for the spring Texas race (dates back to 1997). In both cases, the previous low was set last year. No doubt contributing to the record-low performance was a nearly two-hour rain delay that pushed the start of the race past 9:30 PM ET. Despite the decline, the race was the top sporting event of the weekend outside of The Masters.(Sports Media Watch)(4-12-2016)
UPDATE2: NASCAR Sprint Cup racing from Texas earned a 2.7 final rating and 4.3 million viewers on FOX last Saturday night, down 7% in ratings and 10% in viewership from last year (2.9, 4.8M). The start of the race was delayed more than an hour due to rain. Excluding rainouts – i.e., races that were postponed rather than delayed – the 2.7 rating is the lowest ever for a NASCAR Sprint Cup race on FOX. This is the second straight year Texas has set a network low, though rain was clearly a factor this time around. The 2.7 is also the lowest ever for the spring Texas race (dates back to 1997). Since earning a 5.6 in 2007, ratings for the race have declined in each successive year (again excluding rainouts). Despite the lower numbers, NASCAR on FOX topped the combined audience of the Warriors/Grizzlies and Cavaliers/Bulls NBA games on ESPN and ABC (4.2M). Keep in mind ESPN’s Warriors coverage was blacked out in the Bay Area. For the weekend, it was the top sporting event outside of The Masters.(Sports Media Watch / Programming Insider) see race-by-race TV Ratings for 2016 and a comparison chart on the 2016 TV Ratings page.(4-16-2016) - Bristol Driver Notes & Facts:

(NASCAR) - Comcast featured on Edwards car at Bristol: #19-Carl Edwards heads to Bristol, TN this weekend with Comcast Business as his primary sponsor. - Kyle Busch looking for record third straight weekend sweep: Last week at Texas Motor Speedway, #18-Kyle Busch swept the XFINITY Series and Cup races – a week after winning both the Camping World Truck Series and Cup races at Martinsville Speedway. Busch and Harry Gant are the only drivers to have swept consecutive NASCAR weekends, a feat Gant accomplished in 1991 at Richmond and Dover. No driver has ever swept three consecutive NASCAR weekends – yet. But Busch think he has a realistic shot, even though he’ll have to win Saturday’s XFINITY Series race under a completely new Dash 4 Cash format featuring two 50-lap heat races and a 200-lap main event.(NASCAR Wire Service)(4-16-2016)
- Gilliland to race at Talladega: On hand to watch his son Todd Gilliland try to make NASCAR K&N; Pro Series East history Saturday at Bristol, David Gilliland confirmed that he will compete in the upcoming NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega. Gilliland will drive a third entry [#35 Ford] for Front Row Motorsports as a teammate to Chris Buescher and Landon Cassill. Gilliland attempted to make the Daytona 500, but failed to qualify. While Gilliland has enjoyed watching son Todd do magical things on the NASCAR K&N; Pro Series side, the 40-year-old is ready to get back behind the seat. “I’m excited about it,” said Gilliland. “We’ve been busy working with Todd and BRM and all the folks in the K&N; Series, but I’m looking forward to it. We have an off-weekend, so Todd’s going to let me go race. We’ve been joking about it. He said he’ll even driver coach me. We’re going to have a lot of fun with it. Talladega is a very special place and we’ve had some great runs there and to get back with Front Row Motorsports and Bob Jenkins, they’re putting a lot of effort into it and I’m excited about it.” Gilliland mentioned that they have sponsorship for the car, which is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. There’s speculation that Gilliland could also run the road course races at Sonoma and Watkins Glen International for FRM, Gilliland said, however, the approach is to take one race at a time.(Catchfence)(4-16-2016)
- Larry McClure recalls the good old days at MMM: Larry McClure smiles when he thinks back on the glory days of Morgan-McClure Motorsports (#4 Kodak Chevy / Olds / Pontiac). For 27 years, the Abingdon, Virginia-based team represented a source of pride for Southwest Virginia residents and a symbol of hope for NASCAR teams who operated away from the stock car epicenter of Charlotte, NC. Relying on hometown owners, homegrown employees and a diverse cast of drivers, MMM won 14 Cup races and 13 poles in the familiar yellow #4 car. That resume included three victories in the biggest event on the schedule – the Daytona 500 (one with Ernie Irvan and two with Sterling Marlin). McClure served as general manager for MMM and was a co-owner along with his three brothers and businessman Tim Morgan. In a wide-ranging interview earlier this week, McClure talked about the ups and downs in his NASCAR adventure and personal life. Read the full interview at the Bristol Herald Courier (4-16-2016)
- What happened to Ty Dillon in qualifying? Ty Dillon, subbing for injured Tony Stewart in the #14 Bass Pro Shops Chevy at Bristol, was involved in an on track accident during qualifying. The team decided NOT to go to a back-up car. A couple of Q&A;’s with Dillon:
Q) TOUGH QUALIFYING EFFORT OUT THERE, CAN YOU TELL US WHAT HAPPENED?
Dillon: “Yeah, probably one of my most embarrassing moments in racing. I was coming off the corner there and getting up to speed and I clipped the apron and I slid and got loose and slid into the #38 car. It destroyed our right front and took away any good shot we had at a real qualifying lap. Not what I wanted to do in stepping into this No. 14 ride with Bass Pro Shops and Stewart-Haas. I thank them for the opportunity and I feel bad that I tore it up in qualifying and we are starting in the back of the field. But we will work on it and race back up through the field. We have been doing that the entire year. I am just disappointed in myself in making a mental mistake in getting up to speed there. Just real disappointed, but we will come back tomorrow, forget about it, and go forward.”
Q) YOUR TEAM TALKED ABOUT GOING TO A BACK-UP CAR. DID YOU FEEL ANYTHING WHEN YOU WENT BACK OUT THERE THAT MIGHT INDICATE THE NEED FOR A BACK-UP CAR?
Dillon: “Yeah, it just didn’t have the speed, it was real tight feeling. The aero is really messed up. These guys are the best in the business so they will get it fixed. Whether we have to go to a back-up or not, we will be alright.”(Team Chevy)(4-16-2016) - The Groove at Bristol expected to move: In Friday’s opening NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice at Bristol Motor Speedway, there was no mistaking the fastest way around the .533-mile oval. Consistently, drivers ran their top speeds on the bottom of the track. That runs contrary to the past few races at Bristol. Ever since the grinding of the top lane, the preferred line has been the outside. Never fear, says #19-Carl Edwards. The groove will move, either before or during Sunday’s Food City 500. “I’m not exactly sure why,” Edwards said on Friday afternoon when asked why the bottom lane was best in practice. “There might be some slight differences with the Goodyear tires, but probably the best reason or most likely reason for that is that we haven’t put a lot of rubber down on the track yet, and it just seems like this place moves around a lot. We talked about it in practice. I don’t think that the race will be run on the bottom like that. I think it will really widen out, but I don’t know when it will happen. I don’t know if it will happen today or all the way where we might have to wait until Sunday for it.”(NASCAR Wire Service)(4-16-2016)
- McClure and Martin expanding K&N; team UPDATE: Plans for a new era of motorsports in Southwest Virginia were unveiled Wednesday in a familiar setting. With pioneer NASCAR team car and Food Country USA owner Charlie Henderson in attendance, Xfinity Series drivers Eric McClure and Hal Martin announced details on their expanded NASCAR K&N; Pro Series East program. Last July, McClure and Martin first announced their intentions to field a single-car car Martin-McClure Racing operation for developmental drivers in the K&N; Series. Chad Finchum, a popular Late Model racer from Knoxville, Tennessee, was hired as the first driver. Step two was Wednesday’s press conference at the headquarters of the Henderson Motorsports NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team. The sprawling building was once located next door to the headquarters of the Morgan-McClure Motorsports NASCAR Sprint Cup team, which won the Daytona 500 three times. The Martin-McClure team will be featured in a big away in the April 16 PittLite 125 K&N; Series event at Bristol Motor Speedway. Finchum will drive the #39 MMR Reynolds Wrap Toyota Camry while Abingdon’s Caleb Holman will drive the #75 Food Country USA. Holman, a former Xfinity Series driver who currently competes in the truck series for the Henderson team, will be making his debut in the K&N; series which has produced several drivers currently competing in the top levels of NASCAR. Finchum is also scheduled to compete in the K&N; events at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (July 16), Iowa Speedway (July 29) and Dover International Speedway on Sept. 30. Finchum has earned dozens of wins in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, including the season-opening event at Kingsport Speedway on March 26.(Bristol Herald Courier)(4-7-2016)
UPDATE: Moments after winning Saturday’s PittLite 125 NASCAR K&N; Pro Series East race at Bristol Motor Speedway, Chad Finchum cruised up to the flag stand. With the checkered flag hanging out the side of his Abingdon, Virginia-based Martin-McClure Racing Reynolds Wraps Toyota, Finchum took a joy ride around his favorite track to punctuate the biggest victory of his career.”Racing at the local level for the past few years really gave me the experience in a big car,” Finchum said. “When Eric [McClure] and Hal [Martin] formed Martin-McClure Racing and partnered with Reynolds Wraps, I couldn’t have been happier.” McClure and Martin are both former Xfinity Series racers with big plans for the future. McClure and Martin both admitted to shedding tears of joy as they watched Finchum close in on the landmark victory for their second-year team. Veteran crew chief Chris Carrier, a native of Bristol, Tennessee, was just as joyous in the post-race press conference. “This is the biggest day of my pro career,” McClure said.(Bristol Herald Courier)(4-16-2016) - Erik Jones wins XFINITY race at Bristol: #20-Erik Jones won the Fitzgerald Glider Kits 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway for his 3rd XFINITY Series career win and 1st of the year.
