- Rusty wins at Martinsville – breaks 3-year streak: #2-Rusty Wallace won the Advance Auto Parts 500 at Martinsville Speedway for his 55th career Cup win [breaks a tie with Lee Petty and is now 7th all-time], his first in 105 races [at California Speedway, 4/21/2001] his 7th win at Martinsville Speedway, Rusty’s first ever win in a Dodge and first ever for #2 crew chief, Larry Carter. The win also puts the #2 team in the 2004 Winner’s Circle Program, which is now full with 12 teams. #18-Bobby Labonte was 2nd, followed by #8-Dale Earnhardt Jr., #48-Jimmie Johnson and #12-Ryan Newman. UPDATE: On April 18th you can have the chance to be an extra in Dare To Dream: The Alan Kulwicki Story. DDI Films, the Wisconsin based film company, will be shooting at Slinger Super Speedway in Slinger, Wisconsin on April 18th and would like people of all ages to appear as extras in crowd scenes starting at noon. Come out, meet new people and enjoy being in the upcoming feature film about Alan Kulwicki’s life from local driver to champion of the track. Sorry, don’t have any contact info to post.(4-15-2004)
COLUMN Kulwicki’s dream drives filmmakers – Movie to tell NASCAR champion’s story by Dave Kallmann of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel(4-18-2004) - Andrews and Garone at Martinsville…looking: on Saturday at Martinsville Speedway, a couple of out-of-work crew chiefs were making the rounds making contacts. Paul Andrews, who won a NASCAR championship with the late Alan Kulwicki and most recently worked with #99-Jeff Burton at Roush Racing until he was released, and former NASCAR tech center official Joe Garone, who formerly worked as a crew chief with a number of drivers, including Bill Elliott were both on site. Garone said he planned to attend a test next week with PPI Motorsports at Kentucky Speedway to work with driver Ricky Craven on a two-car test.(NASCAR.com)(4-18-2004)
- Triplett back in NASCAR…on the #80: Andy Hillenburg’s #80 Ford is sporting “Kevin Triplett for U.S. Congress” sponsorship on the hood of the Nextel Cup car this weekend at Martinsville Speedway. Triplett, a Republican candidate for Virginia’s 9th Congressional District, has hopes to unseat Democratic U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher who has held the job for 22 years. A former NASCAR official, Triplett has financial support coming from the garage with Jeff Burton being active in the campaign.(Insider Racing News)(4-18-2004)
- StockCarFans.com – Rumblings – Martinsville: It was a long time coming, but #2-Rusty Wallace finally answered that question today. Wallace outlasted #18-Bobby Labonte by 0.538 seconds to break his 105 race losing streak today at Martinsville Speedway. In a race delayed by an hour and 17 minutes for cement repair, Rusty took his 55th career win (he breaks a tie with Lee Petty and now occupies 8th all-time – and his 7th at this half-mile beauty. Rusty’s last win was at California Speedway in April of 2001. Wallace’s winning share of today’s Advance Auto Parts 500 was $170,998 from the over $4.7M in posted awards. He also grabs the final spot on the 2004 Winners Circle plan.
#32-Ricky Craven (16th) had his best finish since he was 8th at Talladega last October
#77-Brendan Gaughan (17th) had his career-best finish today. His previous best was 19th at Daytona in February
#02-Hermie Sadler (26th) had his best finish since he was 23rd at Richmond in September of 2002 (only 16 races)
#89-Morgan Shepherd (32nd) had his best finish since he was 32nd at Rockingham in February of 1999 (only 10 races)

Dale Earnhardt Jr reassumes the top-spot in the points….he led the first two weeks of the season. The Top-6 are separated by 100 markers. We had a passel of drivers move forward three spots today. Rusty Wallace, Bobby Labonte, Dale Jarrett, Ward Burton, and Ricky Craven were the drivers in the Top-30 to accomplish that feat. - Donate Old Phones: Nextel is asking fans to donate their used cellular phones to support the American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services. The phones, which will be collected at Nextel kiosks at Cup races, will be refurbished and provided to active-duty and community-based military with emergency communications to link with families back home.(Richmond Times Dispatch)(4-18-2004)
