(NASCAR Statistics)(4-19-2010) - Allmendinger has made no decision on 2011: #43-AJ Allmendinger says he’s had discussions with management about his future with Richard Petty Motorsports, but no decision has been made for 2011. With Kasey Kahne’s defection from RPM at the end of the season, signing Allmedinger, 28, should be at the top CEO Foster Gillett’s to-do list — if he can pull it off.. Although Allmendinger’s been pleased with the progress the outfit has made this season, there’s still work to do. Still, from Allmendinger’s perspective, “morale’s high.”“It’s only race seven or eight but as long as I do my job and make the sponsors happy, I don’t think I’ll have anything to worry about,” Allmendinger said. “Everything will work out. If you talk to Foster or talk to George (Gillett, team owner), there’s still a lot we have to talk through. But when it comes to sports, there’s the trickle down effect. The first big move was made but no one expected that to start in April. We know every weekend we are getting better as a race team. (Crew chief) Mike Shiplett and my whole group on that (No. 43 team) are learning from each other every week, and I think we’re getting better.”(FoxSports)(4-19-2010)
- Kahne to run military scheme in Coke 600 and Coke Zero 400: Kasey Kahne made quite a few headlines this week after announcing his ownership change for 2012. But, on Friday night, Kahne avoided any of those questions and headed down to Fort Hood to spend time with members in the U.S. Armed Forces. At the event, Kahne unveiled a new Armed Forces paint scheme for his #9 Budweiser Ford with red camouflage and a ‘Budweiser Is Proud To Serve Those Who Serve’ decal on the hood. It is part of Budweiser’s partnership with the USO to honor the country’s service men and women. Kahne will run the die-cast car during the May 30 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway and the July 3 race at Daytona International Speedway. TMS also took care of the Fort Hood soldiers, giving away 500 tickets for today’s Samsung 500.(Dallas Morning News)AND From the Budweiser website:as we support America’s troops by donating $250,000 to the USO’s Operation Enduring Care. From May 1 to June 30, when you buy this Kasey Kahne Armed Forces die-cast car, you aid in that effort. This summer, Budweiser and Kasey Kahne salute those who serve, protect and defend our country at home and abroad. Be part of the excitement as Kasey drives a special Armed Forces car in two major races, in advance of holidays that commemorate our freedom and remember those who died to protect that freedom. This 1:24 scale die-cast racecar is an exact replica of the 2010 Budweiser Armed Forces Ford Fusion Kasey will drive in races at Charlotte May 30 and Daytona July 3. It features the Budweiser “Proud to Serve Those Who Serve” logo across the hood and the USO logo on the roll bar. A portion of your purchase price of this exceptional die-cast model goes to support the USO. And, at Daytona on July 3, Kasey himself will present Budweiser’s $250,000 check to the USO., see images of the scheme on the #9 Teams Schemes page.(4-19-2010)
- Childress in talks with Harvick, no Kahne: Richard Childress is still in talks with #29-Kevin Harvick in hopes of keeping him with Richard Childress Racing in 2011. Childress doesn’t expect his 2011 driver lineup to include Kasey Kahne. Rick Hendrick has signed Kahne for 2011 but must find him a ride in a Chevrolet for one season before Kahne takes over the Hendrick Motorsports #5 car in 2012. Aside from #2-Kurt Busch, who is expected to re-sign with Penske Racing, Harvick is the most accomplished free agent driver available for next year as the 10-year veteran has 11 career victories. “Kevin and I are working hard together to stay together,” Childress said Sunday prior to the Samsung Mobile 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. “Our plan right now is to stay together and our plan right now is to be together. Anything can change, but right now we’re planning on racing together. We’ve been talking. We haven’t signed nothing yet. But we’re definitely talking in the right direction for him to be a big part of RCR and [keeping Kevin Harvick Inc.] all together.” Sponsor Shell/Pennzoil also is up for renewal. “They’re doing their [request for proposals] and we’ll see where that comes out,” Childress said. As far as whether he could expand his operation back to four teams, Childress said the key is managing growth and that the organization would need to make sure it is ready for a four-car team. He doesn’t anticipate signing Kahne to fill any open ride.(SceneDaily)(4-19-2010)
- Gibbs could not commit to fourth Cup team: Joe Gibbs wouldn’t get into the reasons, but he said Friday night that it just wasn’t feasible for JGR to currently commit to a fourth Sprint Cup team when he was asked about Kasey Kahne signing with Hendrick Motorsports. Gibbs thinks that Kahne knows where he’s racing in 2011 even though Hendrick announced Wednesday that his plans for 2011 are uncertain before he takes over the #5 car in 2012. “I am going to have to say he’s not in limbo,” Gibbs said prior to being inducted into the Texas Motorsports Hall of Fame. “I would say there’s been a decision made of what’s going to happen there.” The decision doesn’t include JGR, which had made a strong run at Kahne but couldn’t get the package done before Kahne made the decision to sign with Hendrick. “It’s extremely hard to put together something where you’re trying to put together right sponsor, right driver,” Gibbs said. “That’s part of life in what you do here. You try to craft things as best you can for your race team. We’ve probably been the most cautious of adding a fourth team among the big teams.”(SceneDaily)(4-19-2010)
- Parts confiscated from #13 and #47 teams UPDATE: NASCAR confiscated the lower radiator pans from Max Papis’ #13 Toyota and Marcos Ambrose’s #47 Toyota during post-qualifying Sprint Cup Series inspection. The pans are considered “unapproved ballast weight mounting” according to Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby and is in violation of NASCAR Rule 20-2.3 (added car weight). Darby said the violation could carry a penalty. The piece confiscated on the #13 Toyota was 45.2-pounds, while the #47 Toyota’s pan weighed 25.7 pounds. One crew chief who was observing the steel pieces in the NASCAR hauler after they were confiscated said the pans “should weigh a couple of pounds at best” and be composed of one-eighth inch aluminum. Frank Kerr, crew chief of the #47 Toyota said it was the same radiator pan the team has used all season. “We asked the inspectors when we first put it on the car at California if it was ‘OK’ and they said it was ‘on the edge, but OK.’ There hasn’t been any question about the piece until now.”(FoxSports)(4-17-2010)
UPDATE: The long steel pieces also were installed in an unapproved mounting location, according to the tags on the parts which were on display in the NASCAR hauler. “We’ll know a lot more how NASCAR views these pans [next week],” said Michael Waltrip Racing Executive Vice President Cal Wells, whose organization builds the cars for Ambrose and Papis. “We’ll have to wait and see. NASCAR likes to have parts submitted if you have got something new or different. I believe there was some confusion on what should or shouldn’t be submitted. … In this particular case what we designed was a modular piece that holds a radiator, the pan up front and the duct work and a host of different things. There’s no intent to do anything [around the rules]. We’ll see what they decide to do.”(SceneDaily)(4-19-2010) - Fox to offer extended post-race coverage online UPDATE not allowed : Fox will offer extended post-race coverage of NASCAR with an online program beginning this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.
The Overdrive on FoxSports.com will begin immediately after the network ends its broadcast coverage of Sunday’s Sprint Cup race. The program will use Fox’s entire nine-person broadcasting crew and consist of live interviews and analysis that will be streamed to its Web site. “It’s something we should have been doing all along,” Bill Brown, senior producer for Fox Sports. “It’s definitely a can’t lose, especially when you take into account what the audience wants to see. We are trying to take care of an audience that has invested four hours into the race, wants more, and we can give them more.”
Brown said the idea for an online show had been previously discussed, but network executives realized the immediate need for extended programming following Saturday night’s broadcast at Phoenix International Raceway. Viewers who tuned in for the 3 hours, 48 minutes then received only a brief post-race show of interviews with just the top three finishers. The broadcast ran 50 minutes past its allotted time, and Fox took two commercial breaks after the checkered flag that totaled almost seven minutes. It left no time to follow-up with Denny Hamlin, who received considerable coverage for racing just 10 days after knee surgery. The network also didn’t offer any coverage of Kyle Busch, who lost the race because of a late caution. Fox officials said Busch declined to be interviewed, but viewers were not informed of his unwillingness to speak. Brown said Fox will not set a hard time on how long The Overdrive will run since it will be dictated by storylines. He said all four pit reporters will pursue drivers, crew chiefs and owners for live interviews, mediated by studio hosts Chris Myers and Jeff Hammond. The broadcast booth of Mike Joy, Darrell Waltrip and Larry McReynolds will also stay to contribute to the production.(Associated Press)(4-16-2010)
UPDATE: Fox’s plan for extended post-race NASCAR coverage in an online program was wiped out even before Sunday’s race at Texas got postponed by rain.
“Unfortunately, due to contractual limitations that we had hoped to overcome, FOX Sports is unable to extend its post-race coverage on FOXSports.com,” Fox said in a statement Sunday. “Since this would have been a commercial-free undertaking, our goal was simply to have all parties agree that this would only benefit NASCAR fans, but obviously that didn’t happen.” Turner Sports owns online video rights to NASCAR content and operates NASCAR.com. In response to Fox, Turner issued its own statement Sunday touting its in-depth coverage on NASCAR.com going into and following each race. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Fox and Turner have contracts with NASCAR that “serve our fans very well.”
“We expect our partners to respect and abide by the rights that are in place,” Poston said. “FOX provides excellent coverage of the race on broadcast and NASCAR.com provides 24-7 coverage including a significant amount of content postrace.”(ESPN/AP)(4-19-2010) - Anderson’s Maple Syrup on the #28 at Talladega: Kenny Wallace will have one sweet ride for Saturday’s Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.
