- Gordon may need some sponsorship; talks about crew chiefs: during a press conference on Friday at Richmond, some notes from a Team Chevy transcript:
HOW IMPORTANT WAS IT TO HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS TO LOCK UP CHAD KNAUS AND ALAN GUSTAFSON? “I think it was important. Those two guys are instrumental to our organization, our program and our future. I think it’s definitely a positive thing.”
DO YOU FEEL THAT STEVE LETARTE WILL RETURN AS YOUR CREW CHIEF? “I feel good about it. This is a guy that’s been at our organization for a long time. I think he and I are really, really connecting this year and it’s showing with our performance on the track. I think things are going great so I don’t see any reason why not.”
WHAT IS YOUR SPONSOR SITUATION? “We’re openly pursuing things. DuPont is still going to play a major role in our organization and with the 24 team. The overall cost of the sport and the way the trends are progressing, it’s tough to have one sponsor that can cover everything. We had a lot of conversations with Shell/Pennzoil and we have a lot going on right now as well.”(Team Chevy)(5-2-2010)
- Ford sets date for new engine switch: The Fords of Roush Fenway Racing and Richard Petty Motorsports will switch to the FR9 engine beginning with the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway on July 3 and race it for the remainder of the season – with the exception of Watkins Glen and Bristol Motor Speedway. The Roush and RPM teams will all race the engine at the Sprint All-Star Race. Ford originally submitted the engine for approval in the summer of 2008 and used it for the first time at the fall Talladega race. However, they rushed it before it was fully developed. The overall cost for the project — the first purpose-built racing engine for NASCAR — ran between $15-20 million.(FoxSports)(5-2-2010)
- Kentucky Speedway lawsuit gets resolved: The litigation that has stood in the way of Kentucky Speedway getting a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is over, the track’s one-time chairman said Friday. The news came after a court order was filed in U.S. District Court in Covington in a case related to the federal antitrust lawsuit that has pitted Kentucky Speedway’s former owners against NASCAR and International Speedway Corp. “It’s behind us,” Fort Mitchell developer Jerry Carroll said. “Everything is behind us. The future now has wonderful opportunity at Kentucky Speedway.” There had been a one-day bench trial scheduled for May 7 in U.S. District Court to resolve a dispute between Carroll and one of his founding partners in Kentucky Speedway. The trial was cancelled Friday when lawyers representing both sides informed the court that they settled, according to the court order. The legal action brought against Carroll by four trusts controlled by Dick Duchossois, chairman of The Duchossois Group, challenged whether Carroll had the authority under the ownership group’s operating agreement to control the fate of the antitrust lawsuit. Kentucky Speedway, opened in 2000, is scheduled to host races this season featuring NASCAR’s Nationwide and Camping World Truck series as well as the IZOD IndyCar Series. NASCAR has maintained throughout that it would not consider allowing a Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway until the antitrust lawsuit was resolved and has cited SMI’s involvement as one reason for that stance. SMI has invested millions in infrastructure and cosmetic improvements at Kentucky Speedway. Bruton Smith, the company’s chairman, wants to hold a Sprint Cup race there next year. One option to get a date is to move a Sprint Cup race from one of SMI’s other tracks. The track’s former owners stand to receive a $7.5 million contingency from SMI if a Sprint Cup race is scheduled at the track. Smith was unavailable for comment Friday, a company spokesman said.()(5-2-2010)

(FDA)(5-2-2010) - Skinner looking for more Moss involvement: Mike Skinner had hoped his victory in the NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series last year at Kansas Speedway would have grabbed the attention of his high-profile team owner. The victory was the first for Randy Moss Motorsports, the team co-owned by the New England Patriots’ star wide receiver, and Skinner won two more races, cleaning up the Midwest with victories at St. Louis and Iowa. While Skinner realizes Moss has a day job working for Bill Belichick, he expressed disappointment in Moss’ lack of involvement with the two-truck team that also includes David Starr. “Randy’s a great guy, but he’s not involved as much. … I’d love to see him get involved more. Maybe if we can win us a couple of races before football season starts …” Skinner, the inaugural NASCAR trucks champion in 1995 and a veteran of 245 Sprint Cup races, joined Randy Moss Motorsports last season with the hope of establishing a long-term relationship. “I was hoping Randy was setting the stage for something when he retires from playing, that this could be one of his businesses that could be a lot of fun and be productive,” said Skinner. “I would love to run his race team for him or help him with it. I hope that he gets back into it. We have not seen much interest from him lately.”(Kansas City Star)(5-2-2010)
