  • Aero Work: Though sophisticated computerized data acquisition is allowed during open testing like that at the Lowes Motor Speedway this week, teams still include basic aerodynamics in their plans. Like many teams, crew chief Tony Eury and his engineers tried a few modifications to the body of Dale Earnhardt Jr’s #8 Monte Carlo. Notice the literally taped on pieces of body that are often fabricated on the spot, tested on the track, then replaced with further changes(see the Speedway Illustrated site for the image). If the team hits on something that works, and fits NASCAR templates, the real body will be changed accordingly(Speedway Illustrated)(5-10-2000)
  • Lowe’s Motor Speedway Testing Notes I: Winston Cup rookie-of-the-year contender Dave Blaney spent time on both dirt and pavement during the day. Before testing his Winston Cup machine on the 1.5-mile tri-oval, the 1995 World of Outlaws sprint car champion gave media members rides around the new four-tenths mile The Dirt Track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in a unique two-seat sprint car. • Waltrip and Christopher: Michael Waltrip, BGN car owner and driver of the #7 BAND-AID® Brand Chevrolet, is expanding his BGN program for the 2000 season to include driver Ted Christopher. Christopher will be behind the wheel this weekend at the New Hampshire International Speedway and will return for the June BGN race at Watkins Glen. Christopher’s sponsor, Les Care Kitchens Inc., and Michael Waltrip Racing have high expectations for one of NASCAR’s most diversified drivers. Les Care Kitchens Inc. and Waltrip agree this relationship is one they would like to see progress. Both parties have agreed to walk before they run, but they also see the potential with Waltrip as a car owner and Christopher as the driver. Waltrip believes the addition of a full time Busch Grand National Team would enhance what he is trying to accomplish in the series. Christopher has competed in pro-stocks, modifieds, the Craftsman Truck Series, Busch North, Busch Grand National and the Winston Cup Series. In 1999, Ted made racing history at Watkins Glen International where he was the first NASCAR driver to enter the Winston Cup, Busch North and Featherlite Modified Series races to finish 33rd, 2nd and 1st respectively. His reputation to race anything, anywhere at anytime is proof of his ambition to be a successful racecar driver. Christopher is excited about the opportunity this weekend at Loudon and also hopes it leads to bigger and better things for his racing career. “This is a great opportunity for me. New Hampshire Speedway has been good to me and I know Michael is supplying me with good equipment for this weekend. I would like to have a full time ride in the Busch Series for 2001 and Michael and Les Care Kitchens Inc. are behind me all the way.” Les Care Kitchens Inc., headquartered in Waterbury, Connecticut, is owned and operated by James and Louis Lestorti. Since its inception in 1945, Les Care Kitchens Inc. has evolved into the industry’s largest privately held cabinet maker. • #19 News: After failing to qualify for the innaugral 2000 truck race at Daytona, despite practicing fast enough for the top 20, the #19 Lefturn Motorsports Team began focusing on the Martinsville Race in April following its pre-season plan to run five races in 2000. “We looked at the Daytona experience and realized that renting motors was not thebest program for us,” said Jim Murphy, Lefturn’s owner. “We needed more flexibility for testing, more time to prepare the race truck with the motor in it and easier logistics for the shop.” As a result, Lefturn has acquired motors from Cornet Machine, built by Jack Cornet. Because a test motor wasn’t ready in time for a Martinsville shake- down, the team withdrew from Martinsville. “Our plan for five races included Daytona, Martinsville, Memphis, Texas and Kentucky,” Murphy said. “By dopping Martinsville, we plan to add a race in the second half of the season.” Former Crew Chief, Bucky Gregory took a full-time position with Billstein Schock Absorbers and has been replace by Todd Griffen, a long time Gregory Associate. “Todd worked with us at both the Daytona test and the qualifying attempt,” said Ricky Sander’s, the #19 Ford entry driver, “he proved to be super at race preparation and has worked with Bucky at major events in all Nascar classes. We are real comfortable with him and confident that he will direct a first class race effort.” Griffen coordinated a track test for Martinsville at Peachstate Speedway the week of May 1. “The test gave us a chance to shake the Memphis truck down, learn to communicate and, most important, gave Ricky a lot of seat time,” Griffen said. The #19 Lefturn Motorsports entry at Memphis will again carry its 2000 sponsors with TruckTrix.com as the primary, supported by The Brushguard Warehouse, www.pitboxes.com and Billet Race Products.(StockCarFans Newsletter)(5-10-2000)
