The teams frantically worked to replace the pieces an hour prior to the scheduled start of the NRA 500. “We’re taking (rear-end) housing and some other things. & It’s a group of pieces that surrounds the rear suspension area,” NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said. “It’s just something that is not in the spirit of the rules.” Pemberton said the sanctioning body would not eject the crew chiefs from the speedways and the drivers would keep their starting positions for the race Saturday night. Any penalties could be announced as early as Monday, although NASCAR typically waits until Tuesday to announce penalties. Possible penalties typically could include points penalties, fines and crew suspensions. (Sporting News)(4-13-2013)
- Scott Speed to drive Grand Rallycross car in Brazil: Global Rallycross has announced the implementation of the Star Car, a competitive twist for Global Rallycross. To debut the Star Car at the X Games in Foz do Iguacu, Global Rallycross brought Scott Speed on board to take the wheel. “The Star Car idea was sparked initially as means to create an element of surprise and suspense to both fans and drivers for each of the nine Global Rallycross events this season,” said Colin Dyne, Global Rallycross CEO. “But as the idea has become a reality for Global Rallycross, it is an exceptional element that allows for talented drivers like Scott Speed to get a taste of what Global Rallycross really has to offer.” In each race of the 2013 season, Global Rallycross will select the Star Car driver who will compete against the regular field of Global Rallycross drivers. With that in mind, every Star Car driver is selected specifically, each bringing a different quality to the series. For Speed, Global Rallycross selected him to debut the Star Car in Brazil because of his personality, driving ability and his overall fit for Global Rallycross. The Star Car will make its debut at Global X Games in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, on April 21.(Grand Rallycross)(4-13-2013)
- Mears says additional funding is helping team’s performance: From an interview with Frontstretch:
Q: You finally have enough sponsorship this year to run the full schedule?
Mears: Yes. What happened was GEICO was very influential in making it happen. They stepped up to a level where Bob Germain was able to go ahead and make the full season. So we are doing the full season, but we’re not quite fully-funded. It’s a little tight in some areas, but we’ll be able to run.
Q: That must be a weight off your shoulders, not having to pull in early.
Mears: That’s a huge weight off. Last year, we’d have two or three good runs and then have to start and park. We didn’t really realize how tough that was to rebound from and how frustrating. The start and parks just killed us last year, just deflated the team and it was really hard to rebound from. The guys would get frustrated – it was like, “wait a minute, we’re working hard yet, what for? We’re going to have to park.” So, I think mentally, that was a tough process to get through. Having that weight lifted off our shoulders and knowing we’re going to go run all the races definitely set a new tone in the shop.
Q: As a competitor, how hard was it for you to hear that call on the radio to pull it in?
Mears: The first time I had to do that was probably one of the hardest things I ever did. I mean, I grasped the concept. I understood that as a whole, it was better for our team and for our program, but the first time I ever did that, I just thought, “What am I doing? What are we doing here?” It was definitely difficult and to have that weight lifted definitely allows us to focus on the things we need to focus on.(Frontstretch)(4-12-2013) - Johnson will have a sub for baby-watch: From a Chevy PR:
YOU HAD BIG NEWS THIS WEEK (ANNOUNCED HE AND WIFE CHANDRA ARE EXPECTING THEIR SECOND CHILD IN SEPTEMBER) CONGRATULATIONS. IS IT TOO EARLY ALREADY TO START THINKING ABOUT HOW YOU WILL HANDLE IT SINCE THE BABY IS DUE AS THE CHASE BEGINS? DO YOU HAVE A BACK-UP DRIVER? HAVE YOU GONE THROUGH ALL THOSE PARTICULARS YET?
“We haven’t yet. We know that we need to, but we still have some time. We are not sure who will be available come that time. I was joking with Aric Almirola last weekend that if he wanted to be my back-up driver again he clearly has a full-time gig and can’t do it. We will just have to see, but we will definitely have a plan like always we will be buttoned up. Our doctor has told me that a father has never missed a birth. That gives me a lot of confidence that I will be able to do my weekend job and then be around during the week to meet number two.”(Chevy)(4-13-2013) - Kentucky announces fan initiatvies: Kentucky Speedway is introducing fan-first initiatives that reward long-time season ticket customers, welcome first-time visitors and focus on family entertainment.
